History of Gujarat State

The history of Gujarat state dates back to ancient times. It was home to the Indus Valley Civilisation, followed by rule under the Mauryas, Guptas, and later, the Mughals and Marathas. After India's independence in 1947, Gujarat was part of the larger Bombay State. The people of Gujarat, especially the Mahagujarat Movement, demanded a separate state for Gujarati-speaking people.

This demand was based on linguistic identity and administrative convenience. The government eventually agreed, and on 1st May 1960, Gujarat became a separate state. Maharashtra Foundation Day is marked by speeches from political leaders, flag hoisting ceremonies, and cultural programmes. History of Maharashtra State

The history of Maharashtra state is rich and diverse. From the ancient Satavahanas to the powerful Maratha Empire led by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Maharashtra has played a key role in India's history. Post-independence, the demand for a separate Marathi-speaking state gained momentum through the Samyukta Maharashtra Movement.

This movement was intense and widespread, especially in regions like Mumbai, Pune, and Vidarbha. After long protests and even the loss of lives, the central government accepted the demand. On 1st May 1960, Maharashtra state was officially formed with Mumbai as its capital. Why Were Maharashtra and Gujarat Separated?

Due to rising public pressure and political consensus, the States Reorganisation Commission considered these demands. Finally, under the Bombay Reorganisation Act, 1960, the state was split. Maharashtra got Mumbai, while Gujarat got Gandhinagar later as its capital.
