SSC JE 2026 Selection Process: Paper 1, Paper 2, & Document Verification

The SSC JE Selection Process 2026 is conducted by the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) through two Computer-Based Examinations followed by Document Verification and final post/organisation allocation. Candidates aspiring to become Junior Engineers in departments such as CPWD, MES, BRO, CWC, and other Central Government organisations should understand each stage of the selection process before starting their preparation.

The recruitment process includes Paper-I, Paper-II, Document Verification, and final post/organisation allocation. Paper-I is qualifying in nature, while only the normalized marks obtained in Paper-II are used to determine final merit. Post and organisation allocation is made on the basis of merit-cum-preferences and fulfilment of the prescribed eligibility conditions.

SSC JE Selection Process 2026 Overview

The SSC JE examination is conducted to recruit Junior Engineers for various Central Government departments and organisations. The selection process consists of two Computer-Based Examination papers, followed by document verification and final allocation as per SSC rules.

SSC JE Selection Stages 2026

The SSC JE 2026 selection process includes two Computer-Based Examination papers followed by Document Verification and final allocation.

1. Paper-I (Stage I) – Computer-Based Examination

Paper-I is the first stage of the SSC JE examination and is qualifying in nature. Normalized marks obtained in Paper-I are used to shortlist candidates for Paper-II.

• Subjects: General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Awareness and General Engineering

• Total Marks: 200

• Duration: 2 hours

• Negative Marking: 0.25 marks for each wrong answer

Candidates must secure the prescribed qualifying marks and meet the applicable shortlisting criteria in Paper-I to proceed to Paper-II. Since Paper-I is qualifying in nature, its normalized marks are not used to determine the final merit.

2. Paper-II (Stage II) – Computer-Based Examination

Paper-II assesses the candidate's technical knowledge in the relevant engineering subject or stream. Only normalized Paper-II marks are used to determine final merit.

• Subjects: Relevant General Engineering/subject as applicable to the candidate's selected stream

• Total Marks: 300

• Duration: 2 hours

• Negative Marking: 1 mark for each wrong answer

Paper-II is the main merit-determining examination. The normalized marks obtained in Paper-II are considered for final merit and allocation of post, organisation and office, subject to the prescribed conditions.

3. Document Verification (Stage III)

Candidates shortlisted for further stages are required to undergo Document Verification. Candidates must produce the original documents and certificates required to establish their eligibility, educational qualifications, category and other applicable claims.

Candidates may be required to produce documents such as:

• Matriculation/10th certificate or equivalent document for date of birth

• Degree or Diploma certificate and relevant marksheets

• Category certificate, wherever applicable

• PwBD certificate, wherever applicable

• Experience certificate, wherever required for the concerned post

• Other documents prescribed by SSC or the concerned department

SSC JE Sliding Mechanism System

The SSC JE 2026 notification states that SSC has introduced a sliding mechanism to help fill the notified vacancies to the maximum extent. The modality of Final Result and Tentative Allocation (FRTA) under the sliding mechanism has been explained by the Commission through separate notices.

The final selection and allocation process is based on the candidate's normalized Paper-II marks and preferences of Post/Organisation/Office, subject to fulfilment of the prescribed eligibility conditions.

• Final selection and allocation are made on the basis of performance in Paper-II and the preferences exercised by candidates.

• Separate select lists are prepared for JE (Civil), JE (Electrical & Mechanical), JE (Telecom), and Scientific Assistant in IMD.

• Post/organisation/office allocation is made on the basis of merit-cum-preferences and prescribed eligibility conditions.

• Once a post is allotted, SSC does not change the post if the candidate subsequently fails to meet post-specific physical, medical, educational or other requirements.

• SSC has introduced the sliding mechanism to facilitate filling the notified vacancies to the maximum extent.

Candidates should carefully read the separate SSC notices related to the FRTA and sliding mechanism to understand the detailed allocation procedure.

SSC JE Final Merit List

The SSC JE final merit list is prepared on the basis of the candidate's performance in Paper-II and the applicable post preferences. The official notification clearly states that only normalized scores of Paper-II are used to determine final merit.

• Paper-I is qualifying in nature and is used for shortlisting candidates for Paper-II.

• Normalized Paper-II marks are used to determine final merit.

• Final selection and allocation are based on merit-cum-preferences, subject to fulfilment of applicable eligibility conditions.

• Separate select lists are prepared for the applicable SSC JE posts.

For the Scientific Assistant post in IMD, normalized marks obtained in the applicable Part-D, Part-E or Part-F of Paper-II are considered for final selection. Candidates should also note that the subject or stream selected while filling the application form cannot be changed later.
