Before this, it was part of Bihar, specifically South Bihar. This separation occurred following a prolonged tribal movement advocating for statehood.

November 15 holds a dual significance as it marks the birth anniversary of tribal leader Birsa Munda. Birsa played a crucial role in the tribal movement against the British in the 1870s. Unfortunately, he was arrested and passed away in a Ranchi jail at the young age of 25 in 1900.

Birsa Munda About

Birsa Munda was born in 1875 in the Munda tribe, and people often called him ' Dharti Abba' or Earth Father. He bravely led a rebellion known as Ulgulan or the Munda rebellion against the British government's unfair feudal state system.

  • Birsa Munda awakened the masses and encouraged them to revolt against both the landlords and the British rulers. He organized people to stop paying debts to moneylenders and taxes to the British. His goal was to end Victorian rule and establish Munda Rule in Jharkhand.
  • To achieve this, he formed two groups - one for military training and armed struggle, and the other for spreading awareness. Combining religion with politics, he traveled to villages, gave speeches, and built a politico-military organization.
  • Birsa Munda fought against the unfair treatment of tribals, and his efforts led to the passing of the Chotanagpur Tenancy Act in 1908. This law restricted the transfer of land from tribal people to non-tribals, protecting them from exploitation and discrimination.
