The cell is the basic structural unit of life.
The buildings, though built of similar bricks have different designs, shapes and sizes. Similarly, in the living world, organisms differ from one another but all are made up of cells. However, bricks and cells differ in one respect i.e., bricks are non-living and cells are complex living structures. |

In 1838-39 two German biologists, Mathias schleiden and Theodor Schwann put for word the cell theory of life. It states that (i) cell is the basic structural and functional unit of life. (ii) All cells arise from preexisting cells (Rudolph Virchow). |
