Thinking about the Text

I. Discuss in pairs and answer each question below in a short paragraph (30–40 words).

Question 1. How many characters are there in the narrative? Name them. (Don’t forget the dog!).

Answer: In the narrative, there are four main characters: Jerome, who as the narrator, George, Harris, and Montmorency, the dog. These characters embark on various adventures and mishaps during their boating expedition along the River Thames. Each character brings their own unique personality traits and quirks to the story, contributing to the humor and dynamics of their interactions as they navigate the challenges of life on the river.

Question 2 . Why did the narrator (Jerome) volunteer to do the packing?

Answer: Jerome took charge of the packing task because he believed he was the most knowledgeable about it among all the people present. He was eager to assert his authority and control over the packing process, confident in his abilities to organize and manage the task efficiently.

Question 3 . How did George and Harris react to this? Did Jerome like their reaction?

Answer: George and Harris reacted differently than expected when Jerome offered to do the packing. They simply agreed without any fuss. George relaxed on the easy-chair, and Harris casually put his legs up on the table.

Question 4 . What was Jerome’s real intention when he offered to pack?

Answer: Jerome real intention was to boss over the job and Haris and George to follow his orders.

Question 5 . What did Harris say after the bag was shut and strapped? Why do you think he waited till then to ask?

Answer: After the bag was shut and strapped, Harris deliberately waited to ask, "Ain't you going to put the boots in?" just to annoy Jerome.

Question 6 . What “horrible idea” occurred to Jerome a little later?

Answer: Jerome later realized a terrible thought: he wasn't sure if he had packed his toothbrush. He couldn't understand why he always seemed to forget whether he had packed it or not.

Question 7 . Where did Jerome finally find the toothbrush?

Answer: He unpacked everything and began to put the things back one by one. He held everything up and shook it. Then Jerome finally found the toothbrush inside a boot.

Question 8 . Why did Jerome have to reopen the packed bag?

Answer: Jerome had to reopen the bag because he realised that he had packed his spectacles in it and had to re-open it.

Question 9 . What did George and Harris offer to pack and why?

Answer: George and Harris offered to pack the hamper. George said that he and Harris would better do the rest of the packing and let Jerome take some rest.

Question 10 . While packing the hamper, George and Harris did a number of foolish and funny things. Tick the statements that are true.

(i) They started with breaking a cup. (ii) They also broke a plate. (iii) They squashed a tomato. (iv) They trod on the butter. (v) They stepped on a banana. (vi) They put things behind them, and couldn’t find them. (vii) They stepped on things. (viii) They packed the pictures at the bottom and put heavy things on top. (ix) They upset almost everything. (x) They were very good at packing.

Answer:

The statements that are true are: (i) They started with breaking a cup. (iii) They squashed a tomato. (iv) They trod on the butter. (vi) They put things behind them, and couldn’t find them. (vii) They stepped on things.

II. What does Jerome say was Montmorency’s ambition in life? What do you think of Montmorency and why?

Answer: Jerome mentions that Montmorency’s ambition in life is to disrupt and annoy people, causing them to scold him. Montmorency seems to find satisfaction in making a nuisance of himself, feeling that his day is not wasted if he can intrude where he's not wanted and provoke others. His highest aim appears to be getting someone to stumble over him and curse him for an hour.

Regarding Montmorency, I believe he is simply a typical dog seeking attention and affection. By disrupting the packing process and behaving mischievously, Montmorency is likely trying to engage with Jerome, George, and Harris. His actions may stem from a desire for interaction and acknowledgment from his owners.

III. Discuss in groups and answer the following questions in two or three paragraphs (100–150 words)

Question 1: Of the three, Jerome, George and Harris, who do you think is the best or worst packer? Support your answer with details from the text.

Answer: Among Jerome, George, and Harris, Jerome appears to be the most competent packer as he possesses the skill to organize items effectively. However, he is not without flaws, as he sometimes forgets to pack essential items, such as his spectacles, only to realize later that he inadvertently packed them in the bag. Additionally, Jerome has a peculiar habit of forgetting whether he has packed his toothbrush.

On the other hand, both George and Harris demonstrate poor packing skills. They tend to step on items, misplace them, and inadvertently damage them during the packing process. For instance, they place heavy items on top of delicate ones, resulting in the pies being crushed. Furthermore, their haphazard approach to packing leads to chaos in the room, with salt being spilled over everything, exacerbating the disorderliness.

Question 2: How did Montmorency ‘contribute’ to the packing?

Answer: Montmorency's sole ambition in life seemed to be getting in the way and provoking scoldings. According to the narrator, Montmorency found fulfillment in causing annoyance and frustration to those around him. He would deliberately position himself wherever he wasn't wanted, ensuring that his presence disrupted activities.

Montmorency's interference extended to the packing process, where he inserted himself at inconvenient moments. He seemed convinced that whenever George or Harris reached out for something, they were actually seeking his attention. His antics included dipping his leg into the jam, disturbing the teaspoons, and treating lemons as if they were rats. He even went as far as entering the hamper and purportedly "killing" three lemons before being reprimanded by Harris with a frying pan. Thus, Montmorency's contributions to packing were characterized by chaos and mischief.

Question 3: Do you find this story funny? What are the humorous elements in it? (Pick out at least three, think about what happens, as well as how it is described.)

Answer: The story is really funny. There are three parts that make it so amusing:

  1. First, when Jerome offers to pack, George and Harris agree without any fuss. But really, Jerome just wants to be in charge.
  2. Then, there's a funny moment when George steps on butter and it ends up sticking to everything, even Harris!
  3. Lastly, Montmorency, the dog, causes chaos by sitting in the wrong places and pretending that lemons are rats. It's all just silly and adds to the fun of the story.
