GMAT Score Validity in India: GMAT Score is Valid For How Many Years

GMAT Score Validity in India: The GMAT serves as a standardised assessment for evaluating candidates’ skills and knowledge relevant to MBA education. Various B-schools worldwide accept GMAT scores to admit candidates to their MBA programs. Therefore, achieving a high GMAT score is pivotal for admission to esteemed business schools. However, many candidates have a common concern regarding the validity of GMAT scores.

The GMAT is administered as a computer-adaptive test, and candidates are allowed to take the exam a total of 8 times in a lifetime. The inclusion of multiple attempts for GMAT allows candidates to enhance their scores to meet the qualifying GMAT cut off of their preferred institute. Nonetheless, it is also crucial to know the deadline for using the GMAT scores to seek admission to MBA institutes. To provide clarity, this article addresses various concerns related to GMAT score validity in India.

GMAT Score Validity in India

The validity of a GMAT score extends for five years from the date of the test. For instance, if an individual takes the exam on 20 July 2024, their GMAT score remains valid until 20 July 2029. Candidates can use the GMAT score within the specified time to seek admission to B-schools. However, candidates must consider the college application deadline and GMAT score validity period when using their GMAT scores for the application process.

How Long Does It Take to Get Official GMAT Score?

The GMAT Focus exam evaluates candidates' abilities in verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and Data Insights. Candidates can take the GMAT once every 16 calendar days and up to five times in a single year. However, the total number of attempts permitted throughout an individual's lifetime is restricted to eight. And in a rolling 12 months candidates can take the exam only 5 times.

Following the completion of the GMAT exam candidates get their unofficial scores within 20 minutes. Once candidates accept their GMAT exam scores, GMAC creates a detailed score report, which includes section-wise performance of the candidate. The GMAC issues the official GMAT scorecard to candidates or their preferred institutes in 4-5 working days after the completion of the exam. Candidates can access their GMAT scores by signing into their registered GMAT portal. Additionally, candidates may opt to receive their scores by mail, which may take up to two weeks.

Why do GMAT Scores Expire?

GMAT scores remain valid for five years from the date of the test. After this period, scores expire and cannot be used for admission purposes. The reason behind the expiry of the GMAT scores is to provide graduate schools with up-to-date and accurate information regarding a candidate's academic capabilities. The GMAT serves as a crucial metric in assessing a candidate's suitability for a graduate management program. Moreover, the GMAT exam's content and format evolve over time. Therefore, the five-year validity period ensures candidates are evaluated based on the latest test specifications that are relevant for the latest business scenario. Candidates must note that an expired GMAT score does not hinder their chances of retaking the exam. However, it's essential to understand that most schools consider only the most recent score when evaluating applications. Therefore,  to maximise one's chances of admission, it is advisable for candidates to take the exam while their scores are still valid.

What Happens After GMAT Scores Expire?

After five years, candidates’ expired GMAT scores no longer appear on their Official Score Report. This way, these scores become inaccessible for business schools to consider. However, candidates have the option to access their GMAT scores they got 5 years ago through a special score report request. Here, candidates must note that their score must have been provided within 10 years, or else they won’t be considered under the special score report process. In such cases, candidates should contact GMAC customer service directly to inquire about their historical scores.
