Anatomy Forearm and Hand

General Features

Forearm is the region of the upper limb between the elbow and the wrist. It’s called forearm to distinguish it from upper so yes indeed it’s also called lower arm region. Its homologous to region of leg between knee and ankle. Forearm contains two long bones, the radius and the ulna. It has muscle groups mainly extensors and flexors which have action at wrist joint. Hand is the terminal structure of bones located at the most distal end of arm. It has many bones and multiple joints. There are many small muscles that help in the intricate movements of the hand also called as dexterity.

Joints

Forearm has wrist joint and multiple joints between small bones of hands namely intercarpal joints, metacarpal phalangeal joint. carpometacarpal joints. Every joint has a joint cavity with joint capsule and many ligaments.

Radiographs

The first human radiograph taken in 1895 by William Roentgen was that of hand and wrist. Forearm radiograph shows two bones namely radius and ulna with radius being on the radial side and ulnar side being the medial side. Being one of the most complex joints in human body allowing for stability during movement in all three cardinal planes

Surface Markings

The radius, the ulna, and the muscles that control hand movements form the forearm or antebrachium. Proximal part of the forearm is bulkier, due to the fleshy bellies of the forearm muscles. Distally the forearm becomes thinner as you are palpating the tendons of these muscles. The styloid processes of the radius and ulnar are palpable as the lateral and medial bumps along the wrist respectively. Tendons of the extensor policies brevis, abductor policies longus, and extensor policies longus muscles mark the boundary of the triangular anatomic snuffbox. Radial artery can be palapated here.

Forearm and Hand FAQs

What is carpal tunnel syndrome?

Carpal tunnel is a passage for neurovasculature of the forearm into hand. Medial cubital vein passing through this canal sometimes get squished between the connective tissue due to some pathology leading to loss of cutaneous sensation over surface of palm and many motor symptoms.

What is Ape hand deformity?

Ape hand deformity is loss of oppositions of thumb due to paralysis of the muscle responsible which happens due to carpal tunnel syndrome.

What is Cubital Tunnel syndrome?

Carpal tunnel is an arch like structure formed by a tendon at the level of the elbow joint . Entrapment of the ulnar nerve at this point can cause Hand of Benediction deformity.
