New Version of Corona

New version of Corona has been identified by the World Health Organization (WHO). Cases related to the new version of Corona named JN.1 are being traced by the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG). Classified as a variant of interest (VOI), the JN.1 strain has Omicron lineages.

As the new version of Corona concerns health professionals, everyone especially medical students must be aware of JN.1, the covid new strain in India. Read on to get the latest updates and details about this new strain of coronavirus for medical exams and beyond.

New Version of Coronavirus 2024

Similar to any other virus, the SARS-COV that causes COVID-19 is bound to mutate and change. This is why WHO is constantly monitoring the SARS-COV and its evolving variants closely to be updated on the new version of Corona. Based on risk and other factors, WHO put the new version of Corona in either of the following categories:
  • Variants of Interest (VOIs)
  • Variants of Concern (VOCs)
  • Variants Under Monitoring (VUMs)
According to the latest update on the official website of WHO, the New Version of Coronavirus 2024 that was detected back in September 2023 has been classified as VOI and is named JN.1.

JN.1 Strain - The New Version of Corona

The new version of Corona first surfaced in the United States in 2023. The JN.1, as it is now popularly known, is a descendant of BA 2.86, the Omicron lineage. However, unlike other Omicron lineages, the JN.1 is highly transmissible and turned out to be a dominant variant worldwide. The rapid spread in the cases JN.1 is attributed to a new mutation in the spike protein of the virus which allows it to escape immunity. On the bright side, JN.1 causes mild symptoms and the rate of hospitalization is also comparatively lower than other variants. This new version of Corona concerns medical professionals due to its transmission rate.

Covid New Strain JN.1 in India

The Covid new strain JN.1 was detected in India back in December 2023 in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. Since then more than 2,500 cases have been reported related to this new version of Corona as per the latest data from INSACOG. This sub-variant of Omicron has evolved as a genetic mutation with a higher ability to infect. While this new version of Corona in India has comparably mild symptoms, the government is issuing advisories to adhere to its social distancing guidelines. This is because there are chances that even a small amount of exposure to JN.1 can cause the infection

New Version of Corona - Symptoms

The symptoms of the new version of Corona i.e. JN.1 virus can vary individually. So far mild symptoms are commonly observed in COVID new strain in India.
