TIFR GS Fellowship 2025 Terms and Conditions

The TIFR GS Fellowship is designed to provide comprehensive financial support to students throughout their academic and research programs. This fellowship is one of the most attractive options for research-focused students in the country, as it includes:

Financial Support for Students

The TIFR GS Fellowship aims to provide sufficient financial support to students for the duration of their academic and research programs. The fellowship covers not only the monthly stipend but also hostel accommodation or HRA, making it one of the most attractive fellowship schemes in the country for research-oriented students.
  • Hostel Accommodation/HRA : Hostel accommodation is provided where available. Alternatively, students are entitled to House Rent Allowance (HRA) based on the norms applicable to the institute and the student’s living situation.
  • Fellowship Enhancement : The fellowship is enhanced upon successful completion of registration for the PhD program, which is an important milestone in the student’s academic journey.

Provisional Admission

Students seeking admission to TIFR’s PhD, I-PhD, or MSc programs must submit a qualifying degree certificate (such as BSc, BS, BTech, BE, MSc, or MTech). However, in certain circumstances where the proof of the qualifying degree is not available at the time of admission, students may be provisionally admitted.
  • Conditions of Provisional Admission : If students do not have the final or provisional certificate at the time of joining, they can be admitted provisionally. A certificate from the Head of the previous institution stating that the student has appeared for the qualifying examination and is awaiting results is required for provisional admission.
  • No Fellowship Without Proof : Students who are provisionally admitted will not be entitled to receive their fellowship until they submit the necessary proof of passing the qualifying examination (i.e., their final or provisional degree certificate). Once the proof is submitted, they will receive the fellowship along with arrears from the date of submission or the date of joining, whichever is later.

Deadline for Submission of Proof

Students must submit their degree certificates by the end of the first academic year. If they fail to do so, their provisional admission will be terminated. In exceptional cases, extensions may be granted at the discretion of the Director of TIFR or the Centre Director.
  • Termination of Admission : If a student’s academic performance is deemed unsatisfactory, or if the student fails to submit the necessary proof of the qualifying degree by the given deadline, their admission will be terminated.

TIFR GS Fellowship Additional Support and Benefits

In addition to the fellowship offered to graduate students at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, there are several additional support mechanisms and benefits designed to enhance the academic and research experiences of students:
  • Hostel Accommodation or HRA: Students who are admitted to the graduate programs can benefit from hostel accommodation, which is provided by TIFR. Alternatively, students may be eligible for a housing rent allowance (HRA), depending on the availability of accommodation and the specific circumstances of the student.
