As per the official notification, the AIBE 21 Exam 2026 will be conducted on June 7, 2026. The AIBE is a mandatory national-level certification exam for law graduates who wish to practice law in Indian courts.

To be eligible for AIBE XXI, candidates must hold an LLB degree (3-year or 5-year) from a recognized university and must be enrolled with a State Bar Council under Section 24 of the Advocates Act, 1961. Only those who meet these eligibility criteria can complete the online registration process.

Candidates who successfully clear the examination will be awarded the Certificate of Practice (CoP) by the BCI. The last date to submit the AIBE 21 Application Form 2026 is April 30, 2026. Eligible applicants are advised to apply online well before the deadline and carefully review all instructions mentioned in the official notification.

What's new in AIBE 21 Eligibility Criteria 2026?

The Supreme Court of India has ruled to allow final-year law students to register and appear for AIBE 21, provided they have no backlogs. Candidates who have completed their law degree but not yet received their certificates can also apply. Enrolment with a State Bar Council is no longer mandatory to appear for the exam. There is no age limit, and candidates can attempt the exam unlimited times until they qualify. However, candidates must have a law degree from a BCI-recognized institution to be eligible.

AIBE 21 Eligibility 2026 for Physically Challenged/Disabled Candidates

The academic eligibility for AIBE aspirants is the same for physically challenged or disabled candidates. Such candidates have to ensure they possess the following certificates to avail the benefits.
  • A disability certificate issued by a medical authority
  • The Certificate of Disability must specify 50 per cent or more disabilities within specified categories of amputated arms, blindness, or any other physical incapability.
There is a prerequisite that if candidates want to increase their exam duration by 20 minutes per hour, they are allowed an extra time of one hour for AIBE exam duration.

AIBE Exam Minimum Qualifying Marks For Obtaining COP (Certificate Of Practice)

As prescribed by the Bar Council of India (BCI), candidates appearing for the AIBE exam have to obtain minimum qualifying marks to be awarded a Certificate of Practice (COP). The minimum qualifying marks needed to obtain the COP (Certificate of Practice) are mentioned below.
  • Candidates belonging to the General/ OBC category have to score at least 40% marks out of the total scores of the AIBE exam.
  • Candidates of SC/ST/PwD category should obtain a minimum of 35% marks in the exam.
According to the Bar Council of India, there are no minimum marks required to appear in the AIBE exam. However, candidates are required to score a minimum percentage of grades in their law degree as stated by the university for further education.

AIBE 21 Eligibility Enrollment with the State Bar Council

The AIBE 21 Exam is a pre-enrollment exam. Candidates must enroll themselves as advocates with the State Bar Council. It is a one-time enrollment. Once enrolled, candidates can appear for the AIBE exam multiple times. However, the provisional enrollment is valid for 2 years to become an advocate. If the candidates clear the AIBE exam after the expiry of 2 years, they have to again enroll as an Advocate with the State Bar Council.

Note: According to the recent directions issued by the Supreme Court of India, candidates who are currently in their final semester of a 3-year or 5-year integrated LLB degree course with no backlogs in previous semesters are now allowed to appear for the AIBE 21 Exam 2026. Such candidates can sit for the upcoming AIBE exam without the enrollment certificates.

AIBE Exam Eligibility 2026 Exemptions

Candidates who have completed their 3-year or 5-year law degree before 2009-2010 are exempted from the exam. These candidates can practice law without the Certificate of Practice (COPs). Candidates who graduated in 2008 or earlier, and enrolled later (irrespective of the year of enrollment), don't need to take the AIBE exam. For candidates graduating from the academic year 2009-2010 onwards, the AIBE exam is compulsory to practice law in India.
