All India Bar Examination 20 (XX)

All India Bar Examination 20 (XX): From 2011 onwards, the Bar Council of India (BCI) started conducting the All India Bar Examination (AIBE) for law graduates/lawyers to obtain COPs for practising law in Indian courts. Candidates who had passed their law degree in 2009-10 were eligible for the exam. During meetings held in 2010, the exam was initiated by a combined effort of the members of the BCI and the Legal Education Committee.

The first AIBE exam was conducted on 6th March 2011. More than 20,000 fresh law graduates participated in the exam. The AIBE 20 (XX) notification 2025 will be released soon, and the exam is expected to be conducted in November 2025.

Who Conducts the All India Bar Examination?

The Bar Council of India (BCI) conducted the All India Bar Examination (AIBE) till 2021. However, due to some questions raised on the exam conducted by BCI and relying on the suggestions made by the Supreme Court of India, from the current year onwards, the AIBE exam will be conducted by a testing agency. The testing agency is yet to be finalised. Despite this, the Bar Council of India (BCI) will remain the sole authority for the preparation of the AIBE exam and issuing of the Certificate of Practice (COP) to qualified candidates.

What is the Eligibility for the AIBE Exam?

For the AIBE exam eligibility 2025, candidates who have passed either a 3-year or 5-year LLB degree from any recognised university are eligible. Besides this, candidates must be registered with a state bar council, preferably where they intend to practice law. According to the latest judgement of the Supreme Court, final-year law students can also appear for the AIBE 20 Exam 2025. Candidates who have a Diploma/Certificate in law and those who have not enrolled with a state bar council cannot appear for the exam.

Is the AIBE Exam Mandatory?

All India Bar Examination (AIBE) is mandatory for law graduates/lawyers to practice law in the courts of India. The BCI conducts the AIBE exam to evaluate the basic advocacy skills of law graduates and, based on that, awards the Certificate of Practice (COP) to the qualifying candidates. To make a career in law, candidates need to clear the AIBE exam. However, someone who is interested in working in another organisation with a law degree and not practising as a lawyer can skip the bar examination. There is no limitation on experience or gap years in law practice after graduation.

All India Bar Examination 20 (XX) Number of Attempts

There is no maximum limit specified for the number of times candidates can attempt the AIBE exam. Candidates can sit for the AIBE exam an infinite number of times, as it is a professional exam necessary to obtain COP. In case candidates fail to qualify for the AIBE exam, they are required to register as fresh candidates again. They won't be allowed to appear for the exam based on their previous registration ID.
