GMAT Data Insights (DI)

GMAT DI: The GMAT Data Insights section assesses candidates’ ability to analyse data to solve problems. Information in the GMAT DI section may be presented in various formats, including numeric, graphic, or verbal formats. Candidates are required to systematically arrange the data to identify connections and solve the problems.

Generally, the DI section in the GMAT exam presents around 20 MCQs, for which candidates get a 45-minute time frame. Each DI question comprises multiple components, necessitating correct analysis to ensure the accuracy of the answers.

GMAT DI Scoring System

The updated GMAT Focus Edition examination consists of only three sections: Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Data Insights. Each of these sections constitutes one-third of the exam duration (45 minutes each) and carries equal weight in determining candidates’ GMAT scores. MBA Campus Ambassador Data Insights does not possess its own distinct scoring system. Rather, DI shares the same scoring scale as Quant and Verbal, which ranges from 60 to 90. Additionally, the scoring increment for DI is one point.

What Skills Does GMAT DI Evaluate?

Solving Data Insights questions requires candidates to have a strong grasp of quantitative and verbal aptitudes. Additionally, candidates need proficiency in critical thinking and data analysis. The Data Insight questions specifically evaluate candidates’ ability to dissect and analyse the provided data to solve questions. Skills required to solve DI questions include the following:
  • Analysis of data, including charts, tables, and graphs.
  • Identification and assessment of relationships among data sets.
  • Discernment between relevant and extraneous information.
  • Categorisation of data in coherent formats.
  • Derivation of insights from diverse information provided in the question.

GMAT DI Question Types

The GMAT Data Insights section comprises five primary question formats. These include the following:
  • Data Sufficiency

Data Sufficiency (DS) questions necessitate a combination of quantitative knowledge, critical thinking, and logical reasoning. These questions present two statements related to the data. Candidates are required to ascertain whether the provided information is sufficient to answer the provided questions.
  • Table Analysis

Table Analysis questions provide data in tabular form. Candidates can change the table structure in different ways to meet their requirements. Further, candidates are required to solve related questions.
  • Graphics Interpretation

Graphics Interpretation questions require candidates to analyse and interpret data presented in various graphical formats, such as bar charts, flowcharts, line graphs, etc. Each graph presents two statements with missing information. Candidates must choose the correct answer from the provided options.
  • Multi-Source Reasoning

Multi-Source Reasoning questions offer related information in different formats. These include paragraphs of information, related tables, and more. Candidates have to analyse the information to answer the corresponding questions.
  • Two-Part Analysis

This type of question presents mathematical or situation-based problems, requiring candidates to select two correct answers from the provided table. TPA-type questions in the GMAT DI section may test candidates’ verbal or quantitative skills.

Problem Solving Strategies for GMAT DI

Here is the detailed strategic approach candidates are required to follow for the GMAT DI section:

Data Sufficiency Questions

For the DI data Sufficiency question, candidates must primarily ascertain whether the problem requires a single value or a range of values. In this section, candidates must note that they are required to answer if the provided data is sufficient to answer the questions. An important aspect of this section is to avoid making unnecessary assumptions while solving problems.

Graphics Interpretation Questions

Here are the problem-solving approaches candidates should follow for Graphic Interpretation questions in the GMAT Data Insight section:
  • Understand the graphical data. Address any inaccuracy between the graph units and the provided test.
  • Thoroughly read the related text to gain additional information, which is crucial for answering the question.
  • Determine the requirements of questions.
  • Review all choices of answers.
  • Select the option that most accurately fulfils the requirements of the question.

Multi-Source Reasoning Questions

In the MSR questions, candidates are provided with all the necessary information to answer them. Here are the strategies candidates should follow to solve MSR questions:
  • Read the questions carefully to determine the requirements.
  • Thoroughly analyse each data source.
  • Attentively read the text passages to understand the main idea sequentially and solve the related problem.
  • Provide the answers solely on the provided data. Avoid giving personal conclusions for the questions.

Table Analysis Questions

In this section, candidates are provided with data in the form of tables with related paragraphs. Here are the solution approaches candidates must follow for the table analysis question in the DI section:
  • Assess the table and accompanying text to ascertain the type of information presented.
  • Carefully review the question to understand the required data analysis and the available answer choices.
  • Evaluate each answer statement for the provided question statement to select the most appropriate one.
