NMAT Exam Pattern: Check Exam Structure And Format Of NMAT 2023

GMAC will close the NMAT 2023 registration on 10 October 2023. Candidates aiming to appear for the NMAT exam must submit their application online on mba.com.

The NMAT exam full form is Narsee Monjee Aptitude Test, conducted twice a year. The Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) organises NMAT for admission to various management programs in India. Additionally, NMAT exams are conducted in a time frame of 70 to 100 days. Candidates have the option to choose the day and location they prefer during the NMAT exam scheduling process. Furthermore, candidates have the option to choose between a centre-based or remote proctored exam.

NMAT Paper Pattern

The table below describes the section-wise distribution of the NMAT exam pattern.
Subjects No. of Questions Time Score Range
Language Skills 36 28 Mins 12-120
Quantitative Skills 36 52 Mins 12-120
Logical Reasoning 36 40 Mins 12-120
Further, the NMAT exam pattern includes the following features:
  • Multiple Attempts: Candidates may take the test up to three times during an admission cycle. One exam, two retakes.
  • Slot Booking/Exam Scheduling: Candidates can select a date, time, and location that suits them best.
  • Section Order: Candidates have the option to choose the order in which they want to write the NMAT question paper. One can try the QA first, followed by VA and LR.
  • Reviewing: Candidates may review their answers at each section's end and attempt a retake if necessary.
  • Online Mode: NMAT is computer-adaptive, so questions are chosen based on how candidates perform in previous questions.
  • Objective Questions: All questions on the exam are Multiple Choice Types (MCQ).
  • No Negative Marking Scheme: Each correct answer will earn 3 marks without penalty for not answering questions. Additionally, the NMAT exam does not allow for negative markings. The candidate can try most questions rather than skip them. They can also use their calculated guesses without fear of being penalised for wrong answers.
  • No Stepping Back: Candidates who close a section before they have completed it will not be allowed to go back and review it again. Candidates must complete each section within the time limit.
  • Limited time For Each Section: If a candidate finishes a section before the end of section time, the remaining time is not added to the next section. Each section has its time limit and must be completed within the allotted time.

The NMAT exam 2023 administers a randomly generated test to each candidate from a pool of questions. The test delivers questions one at a time, with predetermined numbers, difficulty levels, and time limits for each section. The test conditions remain consistent regardless of when or where the exam is administered.

NMAT Scoring and Selection Procedure

The exam uses a question pool from which questions are selected based on the candidate's performance on previous questions. This ensures that the questions you receive are targeted at your ability level. The final ability estimate will be calculated using a probabilistic model approach based on modern exam theory. This estimate will then be transformed into a scaled score between 12 and 120. Candidates who score higher will generally receive a more difficult set of questions than those who score lower. Further, Students will receive an email notifying them that their scorecard is ready for download within 48 hours of the exam. The scorecard will contain the scaled scores for each section and the total score. Login credentials will allow candidates to access the score online. Additionally, candidates are advised to save their scorecards and keep a hard copy if needed. Moreover, to enrol in participating institutes, students must undergo a selection process involving a group discussion and a personal interview (GD & PI). Also, if the institute decides, they may conduct a Writing Ability Test (WAT) or a Case Discussion (CD) instead of a traditional GD round. Finally, your scores on the NMAT online tests and your performance during the interview round will be used to make the final admission decisions. So, preparing well and showcasing your best self during the selection process is essential.

Quick Preparation Tips

  • Effective preparation is key to scoring high on the NMAT exam. Candidates should plan ahead and focus on every topic in the syllabus. They should analyse the NMAT paper pattern thoroughly. It's also advisable to practice previous years' NMAT question papers. By doing this, they can identify their strengths and weaknesses and concentrate on the sections that need more work.
  • Improving speed and accuracy is a great way to score well on the exam. The quicker you solve the questions, the more time you save for tackling and the more difficult ones. Taking online mock tests and reviewing previous years' NMAT question papers can help candidates speed up their learning and achieve higher marks.
  • GMAC offers mock NMAT exams online, which simulate the actual exam. Candidates can take the mock NMAT test series to get an overview of their preparation and identify areas where they need to focus more to achieve higher marks. Physics Wallah also offers a mock NMAT test that candidates can use to practice.
  • Exam preparation isn't only about scoring high but also about taking the exam. Sometimes candidates underperform due to anxiety. To overcome exam anxiety, candidates should practice yoga and other mind-calming activities to prepare themselves mentally. They should also eat well to avoid illness on exam day.
  • It's also crucial to managing time effectively during the exam. Candidates should read the questions carefully, answer the easier ones first, and manage their time wisely to attempt all the questions. Practising time management during mock tests can help candidates become more comfortable with the time pressure during the actual exam.
  • Lastly, staying motivated and positive throughout preparation can make a significant difference. Candidates should set achievable goals and reward themselves for achieving them. With dedication, perseverance, and proper preparation, candidates can succeed in the NMAT exam and achieve their desired scores.
