XAT Exam Pattern: Check Exam Structure, Sections and Marking Scheme

The XAT Exam Pattern outlines the exam structure, including the exam mode, duration, sections, number of questions, and marking scheme. The exam is conducted online in Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode and is divided into two parts. Understanding the paper format can help candidates plan their preparation accordingly.

The XAT exam has three sections in Part 1—Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning, Decision Making, and Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation—and General Knowledge in Part 2. It has a total duration of 180 minutes, with 170 minutes for Part 1 and 10 minutes for Part 2, and around 95 questions overall.

XAT Sections and Question Distribution

The XAT exam consists of four sections. Part 1 of the XAT exam includes Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning, Decision Making, and Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation. Part 2 contains General Knowledge.

XAT Exam Section-Wise Structure

The XAT question paper is divided into four sections across two parts. Each section focuses on different skills, including language ability, decision-making, numerical ability, data interpretation, and general awareness.

1. Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning (VALR)

VALR has around 26 questions. It covers reading comprehension, vocabulary, analogy, parajumbles, grammar, critical and analytical reasoning, and cloze tests.

2. Decision Making (DM)

The Decision Making section has around 21 questions. It includes personal and professional scenarios, critical thinking, problem-solving, prioritisation, ethical dilemmas, managerial caselets, and business decision scenarios.

3. Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation (QA & DI)

QA & DI contains around 28 questions. It covers arithmetic, algebra, geometry, mensuration, modern mathematics, and data interpretation.

4. General Knowledge (GK)

The GK section has around 20 questions, including 8 questions from static GK and 12 from current affairs. Topics include economy, politics, business, sports, awards, science, world events, and the Constitution of India.

XAT Marking Scheme

The marking scheme differs between Part 1 and Part 2. Part 1 carries negative marking for wrong answers and for unattempted questions beyond eight. GK does not have negative marking for wrong answers.

PwD candidates are provided additional time at the rate of 20 minutes per hour.
