XAT General Knowledge: Syllabus, Topics, Questions & Preparation Guide

XAT General Knowledge covers static GK and current affairs related to India and the world. The section tests your awareness of important developments in areas such as the economy, business, politics, sports, science, awards and international events. Around 20 questions are asked in the GK section, with questions generally divided between static GK and current affairs.

Unlike the other sections, the GK section has no negative marking for incorrect answers. XLRI also considers GK scores during the final selection process. Therefore, regular reading and revision can help you stay prepared for this part of the exam.

What is XAT General Knowledge?

The General Knowledge section is included in Part 2 of the XAT exam. It is conducted for 10 minutes after Part 1.

The section contains approximately 20 questions. Around 8 questions may be based on static GK, while around 12 questions may cover current affairs.

The purpose of this section is to assess your awareness beyond academic subjects. Questions can test your knowledge of important events, organisations, personalities and developments in India and across the world.

There is no negative marking in this section. This makes it different from Part 1, where incorrect answers carry a penalty.

XAT General Knowledge Syllabus

The syllabus can be divided into two broad areas:

Static GK

Static GK includes information that remains relatively unchanged over time. You should cover:

• History

• Geography

• Business awareness

• Indian economy

• Constitution of India

• Important institutions and organisations

• Major national and international facts

Current Affairs

Current affairs focus on recent events and developments. Important areas include:

• Indian economy

• Union Budget updates

• Business developments

• Politics

• International organisations

• Awards and honours

• Books and authors

• Sports

• Science and technology

• Major national and international events

You should give attention to both areas. Current affairs require regular updates, while static GK needs repeated revision.

XAT General Knowledge Important Topics

Some areas need consistent attention because they cover a wide range of possible questions.

Indian Economy and Business

Keep track of major developments in the Indian economy and business sector. Revise important economic terms, financial institutions and major business events.

For current affairs, follow important announcements related to the economy and the Union Budget. You can also revise major companies, business leaders and significant developments in the corporate sector.

Indian Constitution and Politics

For static GK, understand the basic structure of the Indian Constitution and important constitutional institutions.

For current affairs, follow major political developments and important national events. Focus on factual information rather than opinions or political commentary.

History and Geography

History and geography are mainly useful for static GK preparation. Revise important periods of Indian history, the freedom movement and major historical events.

For geography, cover Indian states, capitals, rivers, mountains and other important geographical features. You should also revise basic information about countries and important locations across the world.

Sports

Sports questions can be based on recent events as well as important sporting facts.

Follow major tournaments, championships, Indian achievements, sports awards and notable players. Keep short notes for major events so that you can revise them later.

Awards, Books and Authors

Awards and literary developments are useful areas for current affairs preparation.

Note important national and international awards, their recipients and the fields in which they are given. You should also keep track of recently published books and their authors.

Science and World Events

Follow major developments in science and technology. Space missions, scientific developments, and important technological events can form part of current affairs preparation.

For world events, focus on major international developments, global organisations, summits and events that receive national or international attention.

Types of Questions in XAT GK

GK questions are generally direct and fact-based. You may need to identify or recall information from the areas covered in the syllabus. Common question formats include:

• Identifying an award and its recipient

• Matching a book with its author

• Identifying an organisation and its function

• Questions about major sports events

• Questions based on economic developments

• Identifying important historical or geographical facts

• Questions related to science and technology

• Questions based on recent national or international events

Some questions may connect current affairs with static information. For example, a recent international event may require you to know the organisation involved in it.

The questions do not require lengthy calculations. Your preparation should therefore focus on awareness, recall and regular revision.

How to Prepare for XAT General Knowledge

GK preparation works better when you study throughout your preparation period instead of trying to cover everything at the end.

Start with static GK and build a basic understanding of important subjects. Once you have covered the basics, add current affairs to your daily routine. Follow these steps:

• Build static GK: Start with history, geography, business, economy, and the Constitution of India. Make short notes for facts that are difficult to remember.

• Follow current affairs: Set aside a fixed amount of time each day for important national and international developments. Focus on events that have wider economic, political, scientific, or social relevance.

• Make revision notes: Do not make lengthy notes. Write down names, dates, organisations, awards, books, and other facts that you are likely to forget.

• Revise regularly: Use weekly and monthly revision sessions. Repeated revision can make factual information easier to recall during the exam.

• Practise questions: Solve XAT GK questions after completing each topic. This helps you identify gaps in your preparation.
