VARC questions test more than vocabulary and reading speed. You need to understand the author's argument, identify relationships between ideas, draw valid inferences and recognise options that distort the passage. Even when you understand the passage, closely worded options can make it difficult to select the correct answer.

Physics Wallah will help you strengthen these skills through focused preparation and regular practice. Understanding why an option is correct or incorrect is particularly important for question types such as parajumbles, sentence placement, para summary and critical reasoning, where the logical relationship between ideas often determines the answer.

Sentence Placement Questions

Sentence placement questions require you to insert a missing sentence into the most suitable position in a paragraph. The correct position depends on the sentence's purpose and how it connects with the surrounding ideas.

Consider a passage describing a photograph taken in Jerusalem in 1880 by Bedford Lemere. The paragraph describes a narrow courtyard, uneven paving stones, distant figures and a blurred presence in the foreground before explaining why the photograph was commissioned by the Clerkenwell Vestry.

The missing sentence introduces the photograph. Therefore, it must appear before the detailed visual description begins.

To solve sentence placement questions, identify whether the missing sentence introduces a subject, describes something, explains an idea, provides evidence or concludes a discussion. Then check whether the sentences before and after the blank form a logical progression.

Reading Comprehension: Thomas Bayes and Country Priests

Reading Comprehension questions assess your ability to understand a passage, identify its central ideas and draw conclusions supported by the text.

Consider a passage about country priests and Reverend Thomas Bayes. A country priest worked in a rural area, but the role did not necessarily require extensive religious training. Ordination in the Church of England required a university degree, although many ministers studied classics rather than divinity. Consequently, some had limited formal training in preaching and providing religious consolation.

Many priests relied on prepared sermons instead of writing their own. Reverend Thomas Bayes was an unusual example. Although he was considered a weak preacher, he was an exceptional mathematician who developed Bayes' theorem.

Bayes' Theorem and Medical Testing

Bayes' theorem calculates the probability of an event by combining prior knowledge with new evidence. Medical testing provides a useful example of how this works.

A test result does not automatically establish whether someone has a disease. Four possible outcomes help explain the distinction:

  • True positive: The disease is present, and the test indicates that it is present.

  • False positive: The disease is absent, but the test indicates that it is present.

  • True negative: The disease is absent, and the test correctly indicates that it is absent.

  • False negative: The disease is present, but the test fails to detect it.

Bayes' theorem helps calculate the probability of a disease by considering the test's accuracy, its false-positive and false-negative rates, and the existing probability of the disease.

The theorem had limited practical use during Bayes' lifetime because the calculations were difficult to perform manually. Bayes did not publish it himself. After his death, it was sent to the Royal Society and published in Philosophical Transactions in 1763. Today, it is used in climate modelling, financial prediction, medical analysis and other fields involving probability.

How to Solve RC Inference Questions?

For inference questions, choose an option supported by the passage, either directly or through a reasonable conclusion. Avoid assumptions about a person's family, motives or social background when the passage does not provide that information.

For example, if a passage explains that country priests often had considerable free time, you may be able to infer that their circumstances allowed them to pursue other interests. However, you cannot automatically draw conclusions about their personal lives.

Remember: Separate what the author explicitly states from what you can reasonably infer. An option may sound plausible but still be incorrect if the passage does not support it.

Parajumbles require you to arrange sentences in a logical order. Pronouns and connecting words can provide clues, but the relationship between ideas is equally important.

Consider these four ideas about identity and personal change:

  • A fixed identity prevents self-transformation and self-generation.

  • Why is this dangerous?

  • This makes adaptation to new situations difficult.

  • Attachment to a fixed identity closes a person off from new forms.

The correct sequence is 2–4–3–1.

Sentence 2 introduces a question that leads into the explanation. Sentence 4 explains how attachment to a fixed identity limits new possibilities, while sentence 3 describes the consequence: difficulty adapting to new situations. Sentence 1 then reinforces the broader problem by explaining how a fixed identity restricts transformation.

The example also highlights the difference between behaviour and identity. Saying "I drink coffee" describes an action, whereas saying "I am a coffee person" can turn that action into a fixed part of how you define yourself.

When solving parajumbles, look for cause-and-effect relationships, questions followed by explanations, and references such as "this" that depend on an earlier idea. These connections can help you establish the correct sequence.

Para Summary: Choosing the Best Option

A para summary captures the central idea of a passage without changing its meaning or adding unsupported claims. The correct option should represent the overall argument rather than focus on an individual example.

Short Films

Short films are widely produced but receive relatively little public attention. They occupy a space between movies and television without enjoying the same level of recognition.

The popularity of Mean Girls after its scenes were uploaded as short clips does not prove that short films themselves are becoming popular. Short clips taken from a feature film are not the same as short films.

Comedians and Self-Censorship

A passage about comedians may explain that they become cautious after seeing other comedians face negative consequences for their speech. Fear of those consequences can restrict their freedom and creativity, even when nobody directly prevents them from speaking.

An option claiming that comedians are explicitly prohibited from speaking changes the argument. Similarly, an option using words such as "must" may introduce a stronger claim than the author intended.

When evaluating para summary options, check whether they distort the argument, exaggerate the author's claims, introduce unsupported information or mistake an example for the central idea.

Reading Comprehension: Inequality and Forager Societies

Passages on social inequality often examine how wealth, political power and social organisation influence one another.

In unequal societies, wealth can be converted into political influence, which may then help individuals accumulate more wealth. This creates a reinforcing cycle:

Wealth → Political Influence → More Wealth

Leveling Coalitions

Levelling coalitions are alliances formed by middle- and lower-ranking individuals to restrain powerful leaders. They help prevent power from becoming concentrated in the hands of a few individuals.

When these coalitions weaken, equality may decline, hierarchy may become stronger, and collective action may become more difficult.

Forager societies were generally small and relatively egalitarian. Farming societies became larger and more settled, making consensus more difficult and creating greater opportunities for hierarchy.

Trans-Egalitarian Societies

Trans-egalitarian societies occupy an intermediate position between small, egalitarian forager groups and highly unequal states. They may have local leaders, differences in wealth and limited hierarchy without the formal power structures associated with states.

Social complexity is not determined by technology alone. It also involves social stratification, hierarchy and the organisation of power. Large monuments, such as pyramids, can demonstrate the ability of elites to organise substantial populations.

Storage, Sharing and Ritual Authority

Sharing resources helps maintain equality because wealth remains distributed across a group. Storage, however, allows individuals to accumulate resources, potentially increasing differences in wealth.

Ritual leaders may also form alliances with emerging elites. Certain marriage arrangements involving expensive bride prices can create debt and dependence on wealthy sponsors.

The passage connects inequality with resource storage, increasing social scale, the development of trans-egalitarian communities and the management of conflict between communities. However, it does not establish that cooperative communities have reached a point of no return. It suggests that social technologies can be redesigned to reduce inequality rather than reinforce elite control.

When answering RC questions on social concepts, focus on the relationships between ideas and distinguish the author's argument from conclusions that go beyond the passage.

Critical Reasoning: Strengthening and Weakening Arguments

Critical reasoning questions assess how effectively you can evaluate an argument. To solve them, identify the conclusion, examine the supporting premises and determine the assumption connecting the two.

Strengthening an Argument

Consider the conclusion that Dubai's wealth is not primarily based on oil. Evidence that 60% of Dubai's GDP depends on tourism directly supports this conclusion. A statement about Dubai's ambition to become a global business leader may be relevant, but it does not support the conclusion as directly.

A strengthening option provides evidence that makes the conclusion more convincing.

Weakening an Argument

Consider the claim that union members earn more because they work in high-paying industries. This explanation challenges the argument that union membership itself helps increase wages.

Evidence showing that non-union workers also receive wage increases following union negotiations would weaken the industry-based explanation. It would suggest that union activity may influence wages beyond the effect of working in a high-paying industry.

Correlation vs Causation

Correlation means that two conditions occur together. Causation means that one condition produces or contributes to the other.

For example, union members earning more than non-union workers establishes a difference in earnings, but it does not automatically prove that union membership caused the difference. Industry, job type or other factors may also influence wages.

To answer strengthening and weakening questions, identify the assumption behind the argument. A strengthening option supports the reasoning, while a weakening option challenges the assumption or provides an alternative explanation.

Odd-Sentence-Out Questions

Odd-sentence-out questions require you to identify the sentence that does not fit the central theme of the remaining sentences. The connection may depend on the overall argument rather than a continuous sequence of pronouns or linking words.

Human Memory and Reality

Suppose most sentences explain that human awareness is constructed from sensory information, memory, inference and selective attention. One sentence claims that memory records every detail with perfect accuracy.

This statement conflicts with the central idea that human awareness involves selection and interpretation.

Worldly Instrumental Activism

Worldly instrumental activism focuses on addressing concrete problems through practical action and existing institutions. It differs from a utopian worldview that seeks to transform society completely into an ideal state.

The connected ideas include pragmatic optimism, specific social problems, practical action and the possibility of progress.

To solve odd-sentence-out questions, identify the dominant theme and examine how each sentence contributes to it. A sentence may discuss the same broad subject but still be the odd one out if its argument differs from the others.

Preparing for CAT 2026 VARC requires regular practice, clear understanding of logical relationships and careful evaluation of answer choices. Focus on identifying central ideas, drawing accurate inferences and eliminating options that distort the author's meaning. PW offers CAT batches to help you prepare for the exam with guidance and practice, so you can strengthen your VARC skills and approach the CAT 2026 examination with greater confidence.

FAQs

What is the best method for sentence placement questions?

Identify the missing sentence's purpose. Determine whether it introduces a subject, provides a description, explains an idea or concludes a discussion. Place it where it fits the paragraph's progression.

How should I solve inference questions in Reading Comprehension?

Choose conclusions supported by the passage. Avoid unsupported assumptions, extreme wording and interpretations that go beyond the author's argument.

What is the difference between a true positive and a false positive?

A true positive occurs when a disease is present and the test detects it. A false positive occurs when the disease is absent but the test indicates that it is present.
