MBBS Prof, About Professional Exams

Professional examinations in the MBBS degree program, are critical components in the academics of a medical student. National Medical Commission has mandated these exams to test the student's knowledge and understanding of the subjects they have studied during their MBBS program.

The MBBS course has a total of three professional exams and is usually held annually after term exams. The MBBS Professional Exams are conducted as follows:

• MBBS First Prof Exam: This exam is taken in the first year of the course and is conducted at the end of the Pre-clinical phase or second semester.
• MBBS Second Prof Exam : This exam is conducted at the end of the Para-clinical phase or fifth semester.
• MBBS Final Prof Exam: Usually this exam is taken in the final year at the end of the Clinical phase or after the last semester.

MBBS Prof Exam Overview

Each MBBS Professional Exam checks the knowledge of candidates on different subjects and must be passed within the allotted attempt limit. In case any candidate fails to clear the professional exam in the first attempt then he or she may retake the exam as supplementary or compartment. However, if any candidate fails after repetitive attempts he or she will be asked to leave the MBBS course. 

MBBS Prof Exams Dates

MBBS Professional Exams are conducted according to NMC guidelines, with each medical college setting the specific dates based on their academic schedule. The exam schedule is published on the official website for candidate reference. AIIMS, New Delhi has recently released the date sheet for the Final MBBS Professional Exams, and most medical colleges follow this schedule. Students should stay updated with the AIIMS dates, as they are generally followed by other institutions.

MBBS Prof Number of Attempts

NMC which is responsible for regulating the MBBS Professional Exams has set strict guidelines for this exam. As per these guidelines, the students must pass the MBBS Professional Exams within the allotted attempts in their respective semesters.

For instance, MBBS students need to clear the First Prof exam in four attempts. These regulations were introduced recently only and the MBBS First Prof exam based on these guidelines was conducted in 2020.

The attempt guidelines are as follows for the MBBS First Prof exam:

• For the MBBS First Prof Exam there will be a total of four attempts to clear the exam.
• If any student appears in even one of the three subjects then the attempt will be counted.
• Those who could not clear their subjects will get an opportunity to appear in the supplementary exam.
• In case a student fails even the supplementary exam, he or she must repeat the MBBS first year with the next batch.
• If students don’t clear the exam four times in supplementary then they will be asked to leave the MBBS course.

This was done earlier due to no restriction on attempts the medical students repeat multiple times to clear the MBBS Prof exams.

MBBS Prof Supplementary Exams

The MBBS Professional Exams must be cleared by students to be eligible for degree certification and completion of the course. Since the syllabus of MBBS can be overwhelming at times, the NMC has allowed students to appear more than once till the attempt limit is exhausted. This is known as the Supplementary exam process.

The supplementary exam is different from the compartmental exams and the process varies as per college. As for AIIMS, the MBBS Prof exams are conducted thrice in the entire duration of the course followed by the compartmental exam for those who failed only one subject and are fulfilling other requirements such as term exam scores.

If candidates fail in more than one subject they must reattempt the exam with the next batch of MBBS course. This is called the supplementary exam and can be attempted only a limited number of times. If a candidate fails in the supplementary exam more than four times than in the MBBS First Prof exam then he or she will be asked to leave the course.

MBBS Prof Exams Eligibility

NMC is the responsible authority for making the rules on MBBS Professional Exams eligibility criteria but the details vary as per the college. Each medical institute issues separate regulations on the MBBS Prof exam at the commencement of the academic session.

These rules include dates for each prof exam, eligibility for attempting compartment exam, supplementary exam criteria, and relaxation terms.

The eligibility criteria for MBBS Professional Exams are as follows:

• Students must maintain 75% attendance throughout the semester to take the exam.
• Students must obtain at least 60% marks in theory and practical exams.
• Compartmental exams will be allowed only for failing one subject or as per university rules.
• Candidates must score at least 60% overall in the MBBS Prof exam to pass the exam.
• Students should have at least 40% marks in aggregate in that subject or have 50% or more in the internal assessment of that subject.
• If a student does not appear in the regular or supplementary exam then that will be counted as an attempt.
• In case a student is ill or has a valid reason to not appear in the MBBS Prof exam then the Dean can allow exemption on a case-by-case basis.
• If a student fails 2 regular and 2 supplementary exams in each phase then the name of such a student will be struck off from the institute.
