Chlorella: Chlorella is a type of single-celled green algae belonging to the Chlorophyta division. This genus includes thirteen identified species. The name "Chlorella" originates from the Greek word 'chlōros', meaning 'green', combined with the Latin suffix 'ella', which means 'small'.

Chlorella Structure

• Shape and Size: Chlorella cells are spherical and measure between 2 and 10 micrometres (μm) in diameter, making them significantly smaller than the width of a human hair.
• Cell Wall: The cell is encased in a sturdy wall made of cellulose, which provides protection from environmental challenges.
• Chloroplast: The most noticeable internal component is the large, cup-shaped chloroplast. This is where photosynthesis occurs, with Chlorella converting sunlight into energy. The chloroplast contains chlorophyll a and b, which are the pigments responsible for Chlorella’s green colour and its ability to absorb sunlight for photosynthesis.
• Cytoplasm: This gel-like substance fills the cell and holds various organelles. It contains all the necessary components for the cell to function, including ribosomes for protein synthesis and enzymes for metabolic processes.
• Nucleus: Chlorella contains a single nucleus that holds the cell’s genetic information (DNA).
• No Flagella: Unlike many algae, Chlorella does not have flagella, the tail-like structures that some organisms use for movement. Therefore, Chlorella is non-motile.

• The Chlorella cell grows by using sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to perform photosynthesis, creating glucose (a type of sugar that provides energy) and oxygen.

• The fully grown cell prepares to divide by making copies of its DNA and other internal structures.

• The cell proceeds to divide, duplicating its nucleus and chloroplasts (which are important for photosynthesis). The cell’s interior, known as the cytoplasm, splits several times, usually resulting in 2, 4, or 8 new cells.

• These new cells, called daughter cells, develop within the original cell wall. Once they are fully formed, the outer wall of the parent cell breaks open and the daughter cells are released. These cells, called autospores, are exact copies of the parent cell.
• These autospores then grow into new Chlorella cells, completing the cycle.
