On May 4, 2025, NEET 2025 Exam was held across India. In Indore and Ujjain, some students faced a power failure during the exam.
Students said they had to give the NEET 2025 exam in dark rooms, and no extra time was given.
Electricity went off in the middle of the NEET exam, affecting focus and visibility.
Some exam centres like ILVA Higher Secondary School, Shri Vaishnav Academy, and Madhav College were mentioned in the petitions.
Around 200 students complained, but only those who filed petitions before June 3, 2025, are eligible for the re-test.
This situation caused unequal exam conditions, which violated the right to equality (Article 14) of the Indian Constitution.

The case was heard by Justice Subodh Abhyankar in the Indore Bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court. The court listened to the students and gave the following orders:
Re-NEET Exam Must Be Conducted: The NTA has to conduct a fresh NEET UG exam only for the affected students.
Only Re-NEET Exam Scores Will Count: The original exam marks will not be used. Students’ final rank will depend only on their re-exam performance.
Fairness and Equality Matter: The judge said this was a case of unequal conditions during the exam. Some students had proper lighting, but others did not. This was unfair and against Article 14 of the Indian Constitution (Right to Equality).
Limited to Petitioners Only: Only students who filed petitions before June 3 can give the re-exam. Others will not get this chance.
Counselling to Wait: The court also said that counselling for these students will be based on re-exam results only.
The court added that the NTA must hold the re-exam as early as possible and declare results soon. The judge clearly said these students were placed at a disadvantage even though they did nothing wrong.
The National Testing Agency (NTA) and Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the government, gave their side of the story:
Alternative Lights Were Used: They said that backups like candles, torches, inverters, and emergency lights were used at centres.
All Centres Functioned Well: The city coordinator of Indore NEET Zone-1 said that exams were held peacefully in all 12 centres.
No Impact on Performance: NTA checked the number of questions answered by affected students. They said it showed that students were able to finish the paper properly.
High Scores from Affected Centres: NTA said that 11 students from these centres even scored above 600 marks out of 720, which means they became toppers in NEET 2025.
Madras HC Rejected Similar Case: NTA also referred to a recent case in Madras High Court where a similar complaint about power failure was rejected.
But still, the MP High Court did not accept the NTA’s claims and focused more on students’ real experience and the need for fairness.
