NMC Revised NEET UG Eligibility Criteria

In a public notice issued on November 22, Wednesday, the NMC emphasized that this decision would also benefit students whose applications were previously rejected under the former criteria. This revision in eligibility criteria comes after a comprehensive evaluation of the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020 during a meeting held in June. The modified criteria now enable candidates to study the essential subjects alongside English. The earlier requirement of a two-year regular study of Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology with English, and practical exams in affiliated schools is no longer mandatory. Moreover, the restriction on studying an additional subject like Biology or any other relevant subject after passing the 12th class has been lifted.

Why is NMC Revised NEET UG Eligibility Criteria important?

NMC revised NEET UG eligibility criteria provisions set by the National Medical Commission (NMC) faced a significant legal challenge before the Delhi High Court, resulting in a judgment on May 11, 2018. This judicial decision held consequential implications, particularly for candidates aspiring to pursue graduate and primary medical courses in foreign medical institutions. The affected regulations included the Eligibility Requirement for taking Admission in an Undergraduate Medical Course in a Foreign Medical Institution Regulations, 2002, and the Screening Test Regulation, 2002.

Subsequently, candidates found themselves excluded from the NEET UG exam, and their applications seeking eligibility certificates were rejected due to the legal intricacies. To address these challenges, the NMC took decisive action by formulating the Graduate Medical Education Regulations, 2023, officially notified on June 2. Regulation 11(b) within this framework stipulates that candidates who have completed their 10+2 education or its equivalent with the subjects of Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English are deemed eligible for appear in NEET-UG . These adjustments reflect the regulatory adaptability necessary to navigate legal complexities and ensure a fair and accessible medical education system.
