For example, insects share features like three pairs of jointed legs, classifying them into a specific rank. Other organisms, including plants and animals, are similarly categorized into ranks based on their characteristics. Common taxonomic categories include kingdom, phylum (or division for plants), class, order, family, genus, and species, with species being the most specific. To classify an organism, taxonomists examine its features to determine its similarities and differences with others, aiding in its placement within the hierarchy.

Species

A species is the most basic taxonomic category, representing a group of organisms with fundamental similarities. Organisms in the same species share key features that distinguish them from closely related species.
For example , Mangifera indica (mango), Solanum tuberosum (potato), and Panthera leo (lion) are all species that can be differentiated based on their specific morphological traits. The first word in each name, such as Mangifera, Solanum, and Panthera, represents the genus, a higher taxonomic category. A genus may contain multiple species, such as Panthera tigris (tiger) and Panthera pardus (leopard).

Genus

A genus consists of a group of related species that share more characteristics compared to species of other genera.
For example , the genus Solanum includes species like the potato ( Solanum tuberosum ) and brinjal ( Solanum melongena ), which share common features. Similarly, the genus Panthera includes species such as lions, leopards, and tigers. This genus is distinct from another genus, Felis , which includes domestic cats.

Family

A family is a higher taxonomic category that groups together related genera. The similarities between members of a family are fewer compared to those between species or genera.
For example , the family Solanaceae includes genera such as Solanum, Petunia, and Datura. In animals, the family Felidae includes genera such as Panthera (lions, tigers, leopards) and Felis (cats). Families are typically defined by both vegetative and reproductive features in plants, and by morphological traits in animals.

Order

An order is an assemblage of families that share certain characteristics. The similarities between members of an order are fewer compared to those between families.
For example, the plant families Solanaceae and Convolvulaceae are grouped together in the order Polymoniales. In animals, the order Carnivora includes families like Felidae (cats) and Canidae (dogs).

Class

A class includes related orders.
For example , the order Primata, which includes monkeys, gorillas, and gibbons, belongs to the class Mammalia. This class also includes other orders, such as Carnivora, which consists of tigers, cats, and dogs.

Phylum

In animals, a phylum includes related classes.
For example,  the phylum Chordata includes classes like fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals, all of which share common features such as the presence of a notochord and a dorsal hollow neural system. In plants, classes with similar characteristics are grouped into a division.

Kingdom

The highest taxonomic category is the kingdom. All animals are placed in the Kingdom Animalia, while all plants are classified under the Kingdom Plantae. These broad categories contain a wide range of organisms that are grouped together based on fundamental similarities.
