Photoperiodic classification of plants
Classification of plants on basis of the photoperiodic cycles requirement for flowering is called as the ‘ photoperiodic classification of plants’. Mainly following categories of plants are described in this classification. For More Biology Doubts visit main page of Physics Wallah.
(1) Short Day Plants (SDP)
These plants need a day length shorter than critical day length for flowering. For example, cocklebur (Xanthium strumarium), tobacco (Nicotiana tabaccum var MarylandMammoth), soybean, chrysanthemum, sugarcane, etc.
(2) Long Day Plants (LDP)
These plants need a day length longer than critical day length for flowering. For example, wheat, henbane (Hyoscyamus niger), radish, spinach, sugarbeet, etc.
(3) Day Neutrai Plants (DNP)
In these plants, flowering is not affected by the variations in day/night length. For example, cucumber, maize, tomato, cotton, sunflower, etc.
(4) Short Long Day Plants (SLDP)
These plants need short day condition for initiation of flower and long day condition for blossoming. For example, Petkus rye
(5) Long Short Day Plants (LSDP)
These plants need long day condition for initiation of flower and short day condition for blossoming. For example, Cestrum, Bryophyllum, etc
