CBSE Class 8 English It So Happened Chapter 7 Notes Jalebis

Jalebis is a moral story written by Ahmed Nadeem Qasmi. It tells the tale of a young and honest boy named Munna who gives in to his craving for jalebis. Munna, a student of Class 5, was given four rupees by his parents to pay his school fees. However, on reaching school, he found that his teacher, Master Ghulam Mohammed, was absent, so he couldn't pay the fee that day.

On his way back home, the sight of hot, delicious jalebis tempted him. It felt like the coins in his pocket were asking him to spend them. One coin even seemed to assure him that he could pay the fees with the scholarship money he was expecting the next day. Although Munna knew it was wrong, he gave in and bought jalebis with one rupee, and later spent the rest of the money buying more, which he also shared with other children.

That night, his stomach was full, but his mind was anxious about how he would pay his fees. The next day, to his shock, the scholarship money wasn't given as it was due next month. Scared and guilty, he left school before recess and wandered off to the railway station. Remembering what his elders had told him about not spending fee money on sweets, he regretted his actions deeply.

Hoping for a miracle, Munna prayed to God for four rupees. He even asked God to secretly keep the money in his school bag or under a rock. But each time he checked, he found nothing. Despite praying sincerely for several days, he didn’t receive any money. Eventually, his parents found out about his absence from school and scolded him.

Years later, when Munna grew older, he reflected on the incident. He understood that if God granted us everything without effort, we would never learn important life lessons. This experience taught him the value of honesty, self-control, and taking responsibility for one’s actions.

Conclusion of CBSE Class 8 English It So Happened Chapter 7 Notes

Jalebis is a value-based story that teaches an important life lesson about honesty, self-discipline, and accepting consequences. Through Munna’s experience of misusing his school fees and then seeking divine help out of guilt, the story highlights that mistakes are part of growing up, but learning from them is essential.

It also shows that miracles don’t always happen, and one must take responsibility for their actions. This moral tale aligns well with the CBSE Class 8 syllabus and exam pattern, where students are tested on comprehension, moral understanding, and character analysis through such meaningful stories.
