Children's Day 2023 History

On November 5, 1948, the precursor to the Indian Council of Child Welfare (ICCW) observed the first Children's Day as 'Flower Day.' They sold 'flower tokens' to collect funds for the United Nations Appeal for Children (UNAC). This was done to support underprivileged kids. Then, on July 30, 1949, Children's Day was celebrated widely, with radio broadcasts, articles, and cinema involvement. In 1951, V. M. Kulkarni, a United Nations Social Welfare Fellow, realized there was no system to look after underprivileged children in India. He got inspired by England's Flag Day, which raised money for the 'Save the Child Fund' on Queen Elizabeth II's birthday. He recommended celebrating Pandit Nehru's birthday as Flag Day to raise funds for NGOs working for child welfare. Nehru initially felt embarrassed but eventually agreed. While Nehru's birthday was celebrated since 1947 with public meetings and games for children, it wasn't until 1954 that it was officially named 'Children's Day.' More than 50,000 schoolchildren attended the celebrations in the National Stadium in Delhi. In 1957, November 14th was officially declared Children's Day in India, and the government even issued special stamps to mark the occasion.

These books are loved by children because of their warm and friendly tone, filled with lots of information and a unique way of looking at history. However, some people like Sir Walter Crocker mentioned in Nehru's biography that Nehru didn't have much time for children and didn't really enjoy their company. They thought he sometimes acted when he was around kids, especially during public events, but his interest in children might not have been as strong as it seemed on those occasions.
