What Is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a long life disease that occurs due to the accumulation of glucose (sugar) in the blood. This condition is also known as diabetes mellitus.

The food we eat consists of sugars, carbohydrates, starch, etc. When they enter our gut, they are acted by different enzymes and digestive juices which finally convert them into the simplest sugar called glucose. This glucose is then transferred into target tissues with the help of another hormone called insulin.

Insulin is another peptide hormone secreted by the pancreas. If its production is less or somehow its effectiveness is decreased, it will not allow target cells to uptake glucose. This will lead to the accumulation of glucose in the blood and will lead to diabetes.

Types of Diabetes

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) there are three types of diabetes: type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes. All types have a high amount of glucose, and similar signs, symptoms, and consequences but they vary in their causes and population distributions.

  • Type 1 diabetes is usually due to autoimmune destruction of the pancreatic beta cells which produce insulin. It often starts during childhood.
  • Type 2 diabetes is characterized by loss of beta cell function. It is more common in people 40 years older.
  • Gestational diabetes occurs during pregnancy. The hormones of pregnancy cause resistance to insulin which decreases their production. It goes after the birth of a baby.

Yes, somewhere improper or lack of nutritional diet plays a major role in causing diabetes. All junk food like fries, burgers, carbonated drinks (Pepsi, Energy drinks, etc.), chips, etc. contain high amounts of carbohydrates and added sugars in it. These carbohydrates further break down into glucose (sugar). The more sugar is consumed, the more it will accumulate in the body and will lead to diabetes and also obesity. How Does A Diet Control Diabetes?

The root cause of diabetes is an accumulation of glucose in the blood. This occurs due to the consumption of carbohydrate and sugar-rich food. So, to control diabetes a person can take the following steps:

  1. One should avoid taking high carbohydrate-rich food like fries, chips, cold drinks, chocolates, etc. One must take a balanced diet that consists of a proper ratio of proteins, carbohydrates, fats, minerals, and vitamins. This will reduce the ratio of carbohydrates in food.
  2. A person can switch to a low-carb diet, which does not spike blood sugar levels. Low-carb food includes nuts and dairy products etc.
  3. One can consume protein (meats, fish, or eggs) or fat (butter or oils) rich food which has no-carb.
  4. A person should consume milk and fruits etc. as they contain natural sugar.
  5. Refined sugar is a bad source of sugar, so a person can switch to a natural source of sugar like jaggery powder, brown sugar, coconut sugar, rock sugar, etc.

Is Protein-Rich Food Good For Diabetics?

When protein-rich food (meat, eggs, green vegetables) is taken along with carbohydrates, then the body takes a long time to transform them into glucose. For example- a burger bun is a source of carbohydrates but a leaf of spinach, and a topping of capsicum is a source of protein, and mayonnaise inside it is a source of fat. So, a mixture of food reduces the ratio of carbohydrates.
