Flea Life Cycle

Flea Life Cycle: Fleas are the most commonly found flightless and hematophagous pests. They breed in dungy and unhygienic conditions and cause inflammation and rashes. Fleas are mostly found on the fur or coats of dogs and cats. A flea infestation can cause serious infections if left untreated.

A flea life cycle is a short duration encompassing four stages forming an adult flea. This life cycle is essential to the survival and reproduction of fleas. The following article covers the flea lifecycle and discusses its different phases.

Flea: Scientific Classification

There are over 2500 species of Flea in the world. Scientific classification of an organism allows us to characterise the organism and understand its life cycle better. The scientific classification of Fleas is given below. Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Arthropoda Order: Insecta Scientific name: Siphonaptera sp .

Flea Life Cycle: An Overview

Fleas or Siphonaptera sp . are small global pests. These parasites live for about two years and feed on the host's blood (hematophagy). They have a life cycle of 4 stages that is approximately 40 days long. The different stages of a flea's lifecycle are egg, larva, pupa, and adult. A detailed account of each stage is given below.

Stage 1: Egg

Stage 2: Larvae

Description: The larvae stage is the second stage of the Flea life cycle. The eggs hatch to form larvae or tiny worm-like organisms that have mobility and move from one place to another for food and survival. The larvae feed on organic material or waste, including dead skin, dead insect faeces, and blood. Ideal conditions: No specific conditions are required. Larvae development is ideally dependent on nutrition availability. Duration: The larvae stage lasts for 18-20 days.

Stage 3: Pupa

Description: The third stage of the Flea life cycle is the pupa stage. The larvae spin a cocoon made of a white-coloured, stick silky substance that accumulates dirt and allows the pupa to camouflage. Pupa formation is essential to the survival of the larvae as it protects them from external factors/forces such as pesticides and weather. The Pupa stage allows larval development to metamorphosis into an adult. Ideal conditions: Warm and humid conditions are viable for pupa development. Duration: Under ideal conditions, the pupa stage lasts for a week. However, the pupa can protect and store the growing larvae under unfavourable conditions for approximately 12-14 months.

Stage 4: Adult

Description: The fourth stage is the adult stage. The pupa hatches to form an adult Flea. The adult has distinct appendages and survives on host blood. The adult fleas must feed on a host to survive else it dies within 2-3 months. Ideal Conditions: A warm and humid environment is essential for pupa hatching, and the availability of a host to hatch on is required for survival. Duration: An adult Flea can survive up to two years with regular nutrition.
