Sum of the frequencies = 100 ⇒ f i = 100 ⇒ 35 + f 1 + f 2 = 100 ⇒ f 1 + f 2 = 100-35 ⇒ f 1 + f 2 = 65 ⇒ f 2 = 65 - f 1 – – – – – – (1) Now, the mean of the given data is given by ¯ x = ∑(fi×xi)/∑fi ⇒ 188 = 6150 + 190 f 1 + 210 f 2 100 ⇒ 18800 = 6150 + 190 f 1 + 210 f 2 ⇒ 18800 - 6150 = 190 f 1 + 210 f 2 ⇒ 12650 = 190 f 1 + 210(65 - f 1 ) [from (1)] ⇒ 12650 = 190 f 1 - 210 f 1 + 13650 ⇒ 20 f 1 = 13650 - 12650 ⇒ 20 f 1 = 1000 ⇒ f 1 = 50 If f 1 = 50, then f 2 = 65 - 50 = 15 Thus, the value of f 1 is 50 and f 2 is 15. Sum of the frequencies ( f i ) = 7 + f 1 + 12 + f 2 + 8 + 5 = 32 + f 1 + f 2 ⇒ 32 + f 1 + f 2 = 50 ⇒ f 1 + f 2 = 18 ---------------------- (1) Mid values (x) of the classes are 10, 30, 50, 70, 90, 110 Sum of the product of the frequencies and mid-values ( f i x i ) = 70 + 30f 1 + 600 + 70f 2 + 720 + 550 Mean = (∑ f i x i ) / (∑ f i ) = (70 + 30f 1 + 600 + 70f 2 + 720 + 550) / 50 = 57.6 ⇒ 30 f 1 + 70 f 2 = 940 ⇒ 3f 1 + 7f 2 = 94 ---------------------- (2) Solving equations (1) and (2), we get f 1 = 8 and f 2 = 10. Therefore, the missing frequencies are 8 and 10.
