IELTS Linking Words for Band 8+: Speak and Write More Clearly

IELTS linking words help you connect sentences, explain ideas and make your answers easier to understand. They are also known as IELTS connectors, transition words or cohesive devices. You can use them in both the Speaking and Writing sections to show how your ideas relate to each other.

However, using more linking words does not automatically mean you will get a higher band score. You need to choose the right connector for the context and use it naturally. Adding words such as moreover or furthermore to every sentence can make your response sound forced.

IELTS Linking Words Video Lesson

Below is the video link to help you understand how to use IELTS linking words in Speaking and Writing. The lesson explains what connectors are, how they connect sentences and why you should use them only when they fit the context.

Watch the session to learn how to use linking words naturally, connect ideas logically, and avoid adding connectors randomly. Regular practice can help you improve your IELTS coherence and cohesion and make your answers clearer and easier to follow.

What Are IELTS Linking Words?

IELTS linking words are words and phrases that connect ideas within a sentence or across sentences and paragraphs. They help the examiner understand whether you are adding information, giving an example, showing a contrast, or explaining a result.

For example:

  • Without a connector: Online learning is convenient. It can reduce travel time.

  • With a connector: Online learning is convenient because it can reduce travel time.

The second sentence clearly explains the relationship between the two ideas.

These words and phrases are important for IELTS coherence and cohesion, which concerns how clearly your ideas are organised and connected. In IELTS Writing, coherence and cohesion are one of the four assessment criteria. In Speaking, coherence and cohesion are also assessed alongside fluency, vocabulary, and grammar.

Types of IELTS Linking Words With Examples

Different connectors serve different purposes. Instead of memorising a long list, learn which words to use for each situation.

1. Linking Words for Adding Information

Use these IELTS connectors when you want to add another point to your answer.

  • Moreover: Moreover, public transport can reduce traffic congestion.

  • Furthermore: Furthermore, online classes allow students to study from home.

  • In addition: In addition, regular exercise can improve sleep quality.

  • Also: I also enjoy reading historical books.

  • Besides: Besides being affordable, cycling is good for your health.

Tip: Moreover and furthermore are more formal and are generally more suitable for essays than everyday conversation. In speaking, words such as also and besides may sound more natural.

2. Linking Words for Showing Contrast

Use contrast connectors when you want to present an opposing idea or show a difference.

  • However: Online learning is flexible. However, some students miss classroom interaction.

  • Although: Although city life is convenient, it can be stressful.

  • Nevertheless: The journey was tiring. Nevertheless, we enjoyed the trip.

  • On the other hand: Public transport is affordable. On the other hand, it may be crowded.

  • Whereas: My brother prefers reading, whereas I enjoy watching documentaries.

These connectors are especially useful for IELTS Writing Task 2 essays that discuss advantages and disadvantages or different opinions.

Remember that although usually introduces a dependent clause. Avoid writing, “Although online learning is convenient. It saves time.” Instead, write, “Although online learning is convenient, it can sometimes feel isolating.”

3. Linking Words for Giving Examples

Examples make your arguments clearer and help explain your points.

  • For example: Many activities improve fitness. For example, swimming strengthens several muscle groups.

  • For instance: Some cities have improved public transport. For instance, they have introduced dedicated bus lanes.

  • Such as: Students can develop hobbies such as painting, reading, and photography.

  • To illustrate: To illustrate, a student who follows a daily timetable may manage time more effectively.

Use for example or for instance when a point needs further explanation. Avoid giving too many examples when one clear example is enough.

4. Linking Words for Showing Cause and Effect

These connectors help you explain why something happens or what happens as a result.

  • Because: Many people cycle because it is an affordable way to travel.

  • Therefore: The roads were flooded. Therefore, several schools remained closed.

  • As a result: The company introduced flexible hours. As a result, employee satisfaction improved.

  • Consequently: The cost of housing increased. Consequently, many families moved to the suburbs.

  • Thus: The evidence was incomplete. Thus, further research was needed.

Use because to explain a reason and therefore or as a result to show a consequence.

For example: “Many people work long hours. As a result, they have less time for exercise.”

5. Linking Words for Expressing an Opinion

Opinion connectors are useful when you need to explain your position in IELTS Speaking or Writing Task 2.

  • In my opinion: In my opinion, schools should teach basic financial skills.

  • I believe that: I believe that public libraries remain important in the digital age.

  • From my perspective: From my perspective, working from home improves flexibility.

  • Personally: Personally, I prefer travelling by train.

  • To my mind: To my mind, practical experience is as important as academic knowledge.

Choose the phrase that fits the situation. You do not need to begin every paragraph with in my opinion. State your position clearly and support it with reasons.

6. Linking Words for Sequencing Ideas

Sequencing connectors help you explain a process or organise points in a logical order.

  • Firstly: Firstly, governments should improve access to public transport.

  • Secondly: Secondly, they should make journeys more affordable.

  • Finally: Finally, regular safety checks should be carried out.

  • To begin with: To begin with, students should identify their learning goals.

  • Subsequently: Subsequently, the research findings were reviewed.

These expressions can help organise a response, but using firstly, secondly and finally in every essay may sound mechanical. Use them when they genuinely make the order of your ideas clearer.

7. Linking Words for Concluding an Argument

Use concluding connectors to summarise your position or bring your answer to a clear end.

  • In conclusion: In conclusion, public transport needs to be affordable and reliable.

  • To sum up: To sum up, regular practice can improve language skills.

  • Overall: Overall, the benefits of renewable energy outweigh its limitations.

  • All things considered: All things considered, living in a smaller city can provide a better work-life balance.

For IELTS Writing Task 2, your conclusion should summarise your main argument rather than introduce a completely new idea.

Linking Words for IELTS Writing

Linking words for IELTS Writing can help you organise your essay, connect supporting points and explain relationships between ideas. However, they should not replace clear paragraph structure or relevant examples.

IELTS Writing Task 1

For Academic Writing Task 1, you may need to describe a graph, chart, table, map or process. Choose connectors according to the information you are presenting.

  • Show a change — Meanwhile, subsequently: Meanwhile, the figure for rail travel remained stable.

  • Compare information — Similarly, in contrast: Similarly, the number of visitors increased in both cities.

  • Show a difference — Whereas, while: The figure for buses rose, whereas the figure for cars declined.

  • Describe a sequence — Initially, next, finally: Initially, the water is heated. Next, it passes through a filter.

  • Summarise trends — Overall: Overall, the figures show an upward trend.

Do not force a connector into every sentence. Your main priority should be to report the key features accurately and make comparisons where relevant.

IELTS Writing Task 2

In Writing Task 2, connectors help you develop arguments and explain relationships between ideas.

Example question: Some people believe that working from home is better than working in an office. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Sample paragraph:

Working from home has several advantages. Firstly, it reduces commuting time and gives employees greater flexibility. For example, parents may find it easier to manage their professional responsibilities alongside childcare. However, working remotely can reduce face-to-face interaction with colleagues. Therefore, employers should consider a balance between remote and office-based work.

The paragraph uses connectors to introduce a point, provide an example, show a contrast, and suggest a conclusion. Each connector serves a clear purpose.

Linking Words for IELTS Speaking

Linking words for IELTS Speaking help you give connected answers instead of short, unrelated sentences. You can use them to explain your reasons, add details, give examples, and discuss different experiences.

The key is to sound natural. You do not need to use formal connectors such as furthermore or consequently in every response.

  • Give an opinion — I think, personally, in my view: Personally, I prefer travelling by train because it is relaxing.

  • Add information — Also, besides, another reason is: I enjoy reading. Besides, it helps me relax after work.

  • Give an example — For example, for instance: I enjoy outdoor activities. For example, I often go hiking on weekends.

  • Show contrast — But, however, although: I like city life, but I sometimes miss the peace of the countryside.

  • Explain a reason — Because, since: I enjoy cooking because it allows me to try new recipes.

  • Describe a sequence — First, then, after that, finally: First, I prepare the ingredients. Then, I start cooking.

Example IELTS Speaking Answer

Question: Do you enjoy reading books?

Sample answer:

Yes, I do. Personally, I enjoy reading historical fiction because it helps me understand different periods in history. For example, I recently read a novel set during the Mughal period. Besides, reading helps me relax after a busy day. Although I sometimes watch films in my free time, I usually prefer reading because it allows me to imagine the characters and settings.

The answer connects ideas while keeping the language conversational. You can use a similar approach for questions about hobbies, education, work, travel, and daily life.

IELTS Connectors: Common Mistakes to Avoid

Learning IELTS connecting words with examples is useful, but you also need to know when not to use them. Avoid these common mistakes.

  • Using too many connectors: Adding moreover, furthermore, and in addition to every paragraph can make your writing repetitive.

  • Choosing the wrong connector: However shows contrast, while therefore indicates a result. They cannot always replace each other.

  • Repeating the same words: Try using different expressions where appropriate, but do not replace a simple word with an unnatural alternative.

  • Ignoring grammar: Words such as although, despite and because follow different grammatical patterns.

  • Using formal language in every spoken answer: Natural expressions such as also, but and because are often more suitable for Speaking.

  • Writing overly long sentences: A connector should make a relationship clearer, not join several unrelated ideas into one sentence.

  • Memorising complete answers: Learn how connectors work rather than memorising an essay or speaking response that may not suit the question.

How to Use Linking Words in IELTS for Band 8+

If you want to improve your IELTS coherence and cohesion, focus on the purpose of each connector rather than the number of connectors you use.

  1. Understand the relationship between ideas: Decide whether you are adding information, showing contrast, giving a reason, or presenting a result.

  2. Choose a suitable connector: Use a word or phrase that accurately expresses that relationship.

  3. Practise with complete sentences: Write two related sentences and connect them without changing their meaning.

  4. Read your response aloud: In Speaking practice, check whether your connectors sound natural.

  5. Review your essays: Underline repeated connectors and remove those that do not add meaning.

  6. Learn vocabulary in context: Practise connectors alongside useful phrases and topic-related vocabulary.

  7. Check your grammar: Make sure the sentence structure works with the connector you have selected.

IELTS linking words help you express ideas clearly, organise your answers and show relationships between points. Whether you are writing an essay or answering a Speaking question, choose connectors according to their meaning and the context.

To work towards Band 8+, focus on clear arguments, accurate grammar, relevant examples and natural use of cohesive devices. Regular practice with writing tasks and speaking questions will help you understand how to connect ideas without overusing transition words.
