National Dengue Day started in 2010, when the Ministry of Health declared May 16 as the day to raise awareness about dengue. The rise in dengue cases during the pre-monsoon and monsoon seasons pushed the government to take action.

The idea was to educate people before the outbreak season began. So May was selected, as dengue cases often increase between June and September. Over the years, this day has played a key role in reducing the disease burden. Local municipalities, schools, health workers, and community groups join hands to spread knowledge.

What is Dengue?

Dengue fever is a viral infection spread by the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito. It usually causes high fever, joint pain, headache, and skin rash. In some severe cases, dengue can cause internal bleeding and become fatal. There is no specific medicine for dengue. Doctors focus on managing the symptoms.

The most dangerous part is dengue hemorrhagic fever, which can lead to shock and death. Children, the elderly, and those with weak immunity are at higher risk. The best way to avoid dengue is to stop mosquito breeding.

Aedes mosquitoes breed in clean, stagnant water, like in coolers, flower pots, buckets, and water tanks. These mosquitoes usually bite during the daytime. If anyone shows dengue symptoms, they must visit a doctor immediately, as prevention is better than a cure.

Dengue Cases in India

India sees thousands of dengue cases each year. According to the National Center for Vector Borne Diseases Control (NCVBDC), by December 2024, around 2,33,400 cases of dengue were reported, with several deaths across the country. The number often rises during and after the monsoon. Urban areas are hit the most due to poor waste management and waterlogging.

Lack of public awareness, poor sanitation, and climate change make the problem worse. Many people ignore symptoms in the early stages. Also, unchecked home remedies delay treatment. Therefore, the government urges everyone to seek early medical help.
