History of the Polavaram Project
The Polavaram Project was first proposed in 1941 during the Madras Presidency to address irrigation needs by creating a reservoir on the Godavari River. Significant progress began in 1980 when T. Anjaiah, then Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, laid the foundation stone. However, the project faced delays due to financial and technical challenges. In 2004, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy revived it with a groundbreaking ceremony. In 2014 , the project was declared a national project, gaining central government support. The project aims for completion by 2026 despite facing obstacles, including land acquisition and environmental concerns.
Purpose of the Polavaram Project
The Polavaram Project serves multiple objectives that address irrigation, water supply, power generation, and flood control in the region. Below are the main purposes:- Irrigation: The project aims to irrigate approximately 2.91 lakh hectares of land, which will help improve agricultural output in the region.
- Hydropower Generation: With an installed capacity of 960 MW, the project will contribute significantly to renewable energy production.
- Drinking Water Supply: It will provide drinking water to around 28.5 lakh people in various districts, including Visakhapatnam.
- Flood Control: The dam will help manage floodwaters from the Godavari River, reducing risks to nearby communities.
- Economic Development: By enhancing irrigation and power supply, the project is expected to boost local economies and improve living standards.

The Polavaram Irrigation Project was declared a National Project in 2014 under the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014.
