Vice President of India Election: The Election Commission of India has recently made the official announcement for the election to the Vice President of India. The official notification contains details regarding the schedules and important procedures regarding the election process. It also carries details regarding the nomination and scrutiny process. 

This election process is conducted to elect the second-highest constitutional post in India. It is an important position required to ensure the smooth functioning of the democratic system of India. Vice President of India serves as the ex-officio Chairman of Rajya Sabha and presides over the house. He is elected for a term of 5 years.

Who is the Vice President of India 2025

The Vice President post was vacant since 21st July 2025 following the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar, the 14th Vice President. In the 2025 election, CP Radhakrishnan was elected as the 15th Vice President of India, securing 452 votes against B. Sudershan Reddy’s 300 votes.As the new Vice President of India, he will also serve as the Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha, playing a key role in parliamentary proceedings.

This Election is a constitutional process to elect the next Vice President, and the Election Commission is tasked with conducting the election process. How is the Vice President of India Elected?

The Vice President of India Election is done through an indirect election by a special voting group known as the Electoral College. According to this process, the polling is done by only a certain number of elected representatives. The manner and process of the election is mentioned in Article 66 of the Indian Constitution. The Electoral College to elect the Vice President of India consists of the following members:

  • All elected MPs from both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha

  • Nominated members of Rajya Sabha

  • MLAs of various states cannot take part in the Vice President of India Elections.

Vice President Election Voting System

The Election Commission of India is directed to follow a special method to elect the Vice President of India. It is called the Proportional Representation System by means of a single transferable vote. The system is clearly mentioned under Article 66 in the Constitution of India. 

Mentioned below is a detailed process that works behind the Vice President of India Election:

  • Each member of the Electoral College has only one vote and has to rank the contesting candidates in order of preference.

  • At first, the votes cast as first preference are counted.

  • In the first round, if none of the candidates get a clear majority, then the second preference votes are counted.

  • Such a representation ensures a fair representation of the choices of all the members of the electoral college and indirectly of the common population.

Vice President Election Results

The vice president election results were declared on 9th September 2025, with strong participation from MPs. Out of 781 eligible voters, 767 voted, resulting in a 98.2% turnout. Among these, 752 votes were valid, while 15 were invalid. C P Radhakrishnan governor, contesting as the NDA candidate, won decisively and became the new Vice President of India. These vice presidential election results underline the parliamentary balance of power and the significance of the Vice President in India’s democratic system.
