Threats to Elephant Population
Elephants face numerous threats that endanger their survival. These threats are mainly due to human activities and have caused a significant decline in elephant populations worldwide.- Poaching: Elephants are hunted for their ivory tusks, which are illegally traded in many parts of the world. This has led to a drastic decrease in their numbers, especially in Africa.
- Habitat Loss: Deforestation and agricultural expansion have reduced the natural habitats of elephants, forcing them into smaller, fragmented areas. This makes it harder for them to find food and water.

Elephant Conservation Efforts in India
India has undertaken several significant initiatives to protect and conserve its elephant population, focusing on preserving their habitats, reducing human-elephant conflicts, and strengthening anti-poaching measures. Some key initiatives are : Project Elephant : Launched in 1991-92 by the Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change to protect elephants and their habitats. It includes monitoring elephant populations and implementing conservation strategies. Recently, the Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change (MoEFCC) merged it with Project Tiger to streamline funding and management for wildlife conservation efforts in India. Elephant Reserves: India has 33 formally notified Elephant Reserves covering 80,777 sq km. These reserves include Protected Areas, forest lands, corridors, and private lands. Elephant Corridors: Project Elephant identified 150 elephant corridors across India. These corridors help elephants move freely, reducing conflicts with humans.
