The history of World Press Freedom Day, also known as International Press Freedom Day, dates back to 1991, when the twenty-sixth session of UNESCO in Windhoek, Namibia, adopted the "Windhoek Declaration" for the development of a free, independent, and pluralistic press. Following this, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 3rd May as World Press Freedom Day in 1993.
