What Are the Qualifications Required to Become Chartered Accountant?

A Chartered Accountant (CA) is a highly respected and well-paid profession in India. If you have an interest in business, taxation, auditing, budgeting, accounting, statistics, and financial management, this could be an excellent career choice for you. In this article, we'll explain the role of a Chartered Accountant, the various job opportunities available in this field, and the qualifications needed to become one.

Chartered Accountant Qualifications

To become a certified Chartered Accountant (CA), you must complete three levels of the CA course. Here's a breakdown of each level and its eligibility criteria:

Level 1: Foundation

The first level is the CA Foundation course, also known as the Common Proficiency Test. This course lasts four months, and you must have completed 10+2 in any stream to be eligible. After completing the course, you need to pass the CA Foundation exam.

Level 2: Intermediate

The second level is the CA Intermediate course, which takes three years to complete. To be eligible, you need a graduation degree with at least 55% marks in commerce subjects or 60% in non-commerce subjects, or you must have passed the Foundation level. The Intermediate level consists of two groups of exams, both of which you must pass.

Level 3: Final

The third and final level is the CA Final course, with a duration of two years. To qualify, you must have passed the Intermediate level and completed two and a half years of articleship. After finishing the course and your articleship, you need to clear the CA Final exam to become a CA. The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) oversees the certification process. ICAI conducts the exams and certifies candidates as qualified Chartered Accountants upon successful completion of the three levels.

Steps to Become a CA

Becoming a Chartered Accountant (CA) can be achieved through two main paths. The first is starting at the foundation level after completing 10+2 (senior secondary examination) and passing all three stages. Alternatively, there's the direct entry route, bypassing the foundation level, requiring a bachelor's degree with 55% in commerce or 60% in non-commerce. If you choose the foundation route:
  • Register for the CA foundation course on the ICAI website after 10+2.
  • After 10+2 and four months of foundation course study, fill out the exam form.
  • To pass, secure at least 30% in each section and 50% overall.
  • Upon passing, register for the intermediate course.
  • Complete eight months of intermediate studies.
  • Qualify at least one of the two groups in CA intermediate.
  • After registering for intermediate, complete four weeks of ICITSS.
  • Enroll in a three-year articleship/training program.
  • Clear remaining intermediate exams and register for the CA final course.
  • During the last two years of articleship, complete AICITSS.
  • Sit for the final exam after completing articleship or during the last six months.
  • After passing, register as an ICAI member to become a CA.
For the direct entry route:
  • After graduation, register for CA intermediate.
  • Complete four weeks of ICITSS after registration.
  • Enroll in a three-year articleship/training program.
  • After nine months of articleship, take the intermediate exams.
  • Upon passing, register for the final course.
  • During the last two years of articleship, complete AICITSS.
  • Sit for the final exam after completing articleship or during the last six months.
  • After passing, register as an ICAI member to become a CA.
  • Both routes lead to becoming a licensed CA, offering flexibility in achieving this prestigious qualification.

Chartered Accountant Age Limit

There's no age restriction to qualify for the CA exams . If you've completed your 10+2, you can register for the foundation course at any age. For the intermediate course, commerce graduates with at least 55% aggregate marks or non-commerce graduates with at least 60% can directly enroll at any age.
