India-Thailand Joint Military Exercise MAITREE 2024: The Indian Army has commenced its joint military exercise, MAITREE 2024, with the Royal Thai Army. Joint Military Exercise MAITREE

The bilateral MAITREE exercise, initiated in 2006, is a significant aspect of the defence cooperation between the Indian Army and the Royal Thai Army. It has been conducted regularly to enhance mutual understanding and operational synergy. The Indian contingent, consisting of 76 personnel primarily from a Battalion of the LADAKH SCOUTS, includes members from other arms and services. Similarly, the Royal Thailand Army contingent, also comprising 76 personnel, is mainly from the 1st Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment of the 4th Division.

An Indian Army contingent departed for the 13th edition of the India-Thailand joint military Exercise MAITREE. Scheduled from 1st to 15th July 2024, the exercise will take place at Fort Vachiraprakan in Tak Province, Thailand. The previous edition was held at Umroi, Meghalaya in September 2019.

Aim of the MAITREE Exercise

The primary objective of MAITREE 2024 is to enhance military cooperation and improve joint operational capabilities in counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations, particularly in urban and jungle environments. Exercise MAITREE aims to foster military cooperation between India and Thailand, enhancing combined capabilities for executing joint counter-insurgency and terrorist operations in jungle and urban environments under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter. The exercise will emphasize physical fitness, joint planning, and joint tactical drills.
Tactical drills during the exercise will cover the creation of a Joint Operation Centre, establishing an Intelligence & Surveillance Centre, employing drones and counter-drone systems, securing landing sites, small team insertion and extraction, special heliborne operations, cordon and search operations, room intervention drills, and demolition of illegal structures. Exercise MAITREE will allow both sides to share best practices in tactics, techniques, and procedures for conducting joint operations, thereby enhancing interoperability, camaraderie, and cooperation between the soldiers of the two countries.
