NTA Announced 6 Major Changes for JEE Main 2025 That All Aspirants Should Know About

In order to make the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) process more standardized and targeted, the National Testing Agency (NTA) has introduced several important changes for the upcoming JEE Main 2025. These updates aim to streamline the exam pattern, enhance fairness in ranking, and make the entire process more transparent. As an aspirant who is all set to appear for JEE Mains 2025, it is vital to stay updated on these changes to adjust the overall exam preparation accordingly. Find out the 6 major changes introduced by NTA for JEE Main 2025 that all aspirants should know about here:

Change 1:  Revised JEE Main Exam Pattern 2025

The JEE Main 2025 Exam Pattern has been revised, shifting back to the pre-pandemic format. This change removes the optional questions in Section B, which were introduced during the pandemic to provide some flexibility and reduce stress. In the updated exam format for JEE Main 2025, there will no longer be any choice in Section B. Aspirants will now have to answer all 25 questions in each subject, i.e., physics, chemistry, and mathematics, in both Paper 1 (for B.Tech) and Paper 2 (for B.Arch). In total, Paper 1 will have 75 questions, including 20 MCQs and 5 NVQs in each section, ensuring a more structured approach for all students. Change 2. Introduction of Negative Marking for Numerical Value Questions in JEE Mains 2025

Another important change by NTA for JEE Main 2025 is the introduction of negative marking for Numerical Value Questions (NVQs). This means that test takers will lose marks for incorrect answers, just like with MCQs. Previously, there was no negative marking for NVQs, but this adjustment aligns the marking system for all types of questions. Aspirants must be extra careful while attempting numerical value questions now to avoid losing valuable marks. It’s important to practice answering these questions with precision and confidence, as incorrect answers will now directly impact the total score. Change 3. Update in Tie-breaking Rule for JEE Main 2025

NTA has revised the tie-breaking rules for the JEE Main 2025 exam to determine the ranks of applicants with the same scores. Under the new guidelines, the age and application number of test takers will no longer be factors in the ranking process. Instead, the tie will be resolved based solely on performance in the exam. If applicants have the same total NTA score, the following criteria will be used to break the tie:
  • Higher NTA Score in Mathematics: The applicant with the higher score in Mathematics will be ranked higher.
  • Higher NTA Score in Physics: If the tie is still unresolved, the applicant with the higher score in Physics will be given preference.
  • Higher NTA Score in Chemistry: If the tie continues, the applicant with the higher Chemistry score will be ranked higher.
  • Lower Ratio of Incorrect to Correct Answers: If the tie persists, the applicant with the lower ratio of incorrect answers to correct answers across all subjects will be ranked higher.
  • Lower Ratio of Incorrect to Correct Answers in Mathematics: If the tie is still unresolved, the applicant with a better performance in Mathematics will be considered.
  • Lower Ratio of Incorrect to Correct Answers in Physics: If necessary, the applicant's Physics performance will be checked.
  • Lower Ratio of Incorrect to Correct Answers in Chemistry: Finally, the ratio of incorrect to correct answers in Chemistry will be used.
  • Same Rank: If the tie remains after all these steps, the applicants will be awarded the same rank.

Change 4. Elimination of Age Limit From JEE Main Eligibility Criteria 2025

The age limit restriction for applicants has been removed from JEE Main Eligibility Criteria 2025 , which means that anyone who meets the educational qualifications can now apply for the exam, regardless of age. This is a positive change, as it opens up the opportunity for more aspirants who aspire to pursue higher education from prestigious institutions, including those who may have taken a gap year or are older than the previous age limit.

Change 5. Reduction in JEE Main Exam Centers 2025

The number of exam centers for JEE Main 2025 has been reduced, which may affect aspirants' convenience in selecting their nearest exam city. The total number of exam cities has decreased from 300 last year to 284 for this year’s exam. This reduction also extends to international exam centers, which have been reduced from 24 to 14 cities globally. In India, some states have seen significant cuts in the number of exam cities:
  • Odisha has gone from 23 exam cities to just 17.
  • Tamil Nadu has removed three cities: Nagapattinam, Coonoor, and Tiruppur, and added two new cities, Nagercoil and Tiruvallur.
  • Andhra Pradesh has faced the largest reduction, losing 12 exam cities.
  • Telangana has seen an increase, adding two new exam cities to accommodate a larger candidate population.
  • Maharashtra has seen a net addition of two cities despite losing two other locations.
Additionally, the number of international JEE Main exam cities has dropped from 24 to 14 as NTA removed centers in countries like Australia, Brazil, Canada, and Hong Kong. New international locations include cities in Bahrain, Germany, Indonesia, and the UAE, among others.

Change 6. Reduction in JEE Main 2025 Syllabus

Some topics have been removed, while new topics have been introduced, resulting in a more streamlined and updated curriculum. So, " Is the JEE Main syllabus for 2025 reduced ?" Yes, certain chapters, as outlined below, have been deleted to help focus on the core concepts:

  • "States of Matter," "Surface Chemistry," and "General Principles and Processes of Isolation of Metals." chapters were entirely removed from Chemistry. Topics related to P-Block Elements, such as the properties and uses of elements like Boron, Aluminum, Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Sulfur, and Halogens, have also been simplified or deleted.

Will These NTA Introduced Changes in JEE Main 2025 Impact Applicants?

These 6 major changes introduced by NTA for JEE Main 2025 will have a significant impact on applicants. With the removal of optional questions, aspirants will need to prepare more comprehensively for all topics, leaving no room for uncertainty. The reintroduction of negative marking for numerical value questions adds an extra layer of caution, requiring applicants to be more careful with their answers. Furthermore, the reduction in the number of exam centers means that applicants will need to plan their logistics in advance, ensuring they are well-prepared for travel and accommodation to avoid any last-minute issues.
