IIT-Wise Vacant Seats Overview

The Joint Implementation Committee (JIC) Report 2024 shows that although IITs have filled the majority of their seats this year, a few campuses still have some seats left unfilled. According to the reports, many IITs managed to keep vacant seats below ten, with IIT Mandi reporting 6 vacant seats, IIT Kharagpur with 4, IIT Jodhpur with 9, IIT Roorkee with 2, IIT Bhilai with 1, and IIT Jammu with 8. However, a few IITs reveal a higher number of vacant seats. For example, IIT Dharwad, IIT BHU Varanasi, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, and IIT Patna each reported more than 10 vacant seats. Check out the IIT-Wise Vacant Seats details below:
  • IIT Mandi had a total of 520 seats, out of which 514 were filled, leaving 6 seats vacant.
  • IIT Kharagpur offered 1,919 seats, with 1,915 allotted, resulting in 4 vacant seats.
  • IIT Jodhpur had 600 seats available, filling 591, leaving 9 seats vacant.
  • IIT Patna offered 817 seats, with 806 filled, resulting in 11 seats remaining vacant.
  • IIT Roorkee had 1,353 seats, with 1,351 allotted, leaving only 2 seats vacant.
  • IIT (ISM) Dhanbad offered 1,125 seats, of which 1,107 were filled, leaving 18 seats vacant.
  • IIT (BHU) Varanasi had a total of 1,589 seats, with 1,572 filled, resulting in 17 vacant seats.
  • IIT Bhilai provided 283 seats, filling 282, with just 1 seat left vacant.
  • IIT Jammu had 280 seats available, filling 272, resulting in 8 seats vacant.
  • IIT Dharwad offered 385 seats, with 374 allotted, leaving 11 seats vacant.
While some IITs, such as IIT Mandi and IIT Kharagpur, recorded slight increases in vacant seats when compared to last year, most campuses saw a slight decrease in the number of vacant seats. This small decrease in vacant seats might be due in part to recent changes in the branch-change policy, which aims to help students choose their preferred subjects earlier in their studies. As a result, it may lead to even fewer vacant seats in the future, allowing IITs to use their available seats more effectively. Suggested read: First Offline PW JEE Advanced REAL Test

IITs That Offered Extra Seats During JEE 2024 Counseling

In 2024, the number of seats available in IITs increased by about 375, bringing the total to 17,760 seats. In the past, there have been years with many vacant seats, but in 2019, all available seats were filled. However, in 2018, there were 118 vacant seats, and that number has decreased significantly in the next few years. Some IITs have done really well in filling their seats. IIT Bhubaneswar, IIT Ropar, IIT Goa, and IIT Palakkad reported having no vacant seats this year. Last year, both IIT Goa and IIT Palakkad also had all their seats filled. Additionally, several IITs have allocated extra seats to students. Check out the names of IITs that offered extra seats during JEE 2024 counseling here:

What is the Reason Behind Vacant Seats in IITs After JEE 2024 Counseling?

One reason for the vacant seats in IITs after JEE 2024 counseling is the recent changes made to the branch-change system. At the start of this year, six IITs have stopped allowing students to switch their engineering streams after the first year. Later in the year, the total number of IITs without this option increased to nine.
  • Previously, the branch-change option allowed students to move to a different engineering stream at the end of their first year if they achieved the required CGPA. Each engineering branch had its own cut-off scores for accepting students from other streams.
  • However, in 2024, IIT Madras, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Dhanbad, IIT Dharwad, IIT Mandi, and IIT Bhubaneswar ended this practice. IIT Bombay, IIT Hyderabad, and IIT Jammu had already discontinued it in previous years.
Experts believe that since some major IITs no longer offer the branch-change option, students who would have chosen less popular courses at these IITs with the hope of switching to their desired branch are now opting for second and third-generation IITs instead. As an IIT Mandi professor explained the reason for vacant seats in IITs: "Most students choose IITs and courses based on placement or salary packages; as a result, popular branches like BTech in Computer Science Engineering (CSE) attract many students. Previously, some students would select lesser-popular courses at top IITs with the plan to shift to their preferred branch after the first year. Now that this option has been removed by 9 IITs, students are more likely to choose their desired branch at newer IITs, leading to a drop in numbers of students for the less popular courses." Category Wise IIT Seats Matrix

Every year, the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) assign a dedicated number of seats for reserved and non-reserved categories of students to ensure fairness in the admission process. Check out the category-wise IIT seats matrix here:
  • General Category (GEN): 40.5% of the total seats
  • Economically Weaker Section (GEN-EWS): 10% of the total seats
  • Other Backward Classes: Non Creamy Layer (OBC-NCL): 27% of the total seats
  • Scheduled Castes (SC): 15% of the total seats
  • Scheduled Tribes (ST): 7.5% of the total seats
Each of these categories also reserves 5% of the seats for Persons with Disabilities (PwD), ensuring inclusivity in the IITs. It’s important to note that the number of seats available at the IITs keeps increasing each year. In 2024, a total of 17,740 seats were offered. For the upcoming 2025 academic year, the total number of seats will be announced during the JoSAA Counseling process.

In conclusion, the number of vacant seats in IITs after JEE 2024 counseling is influenced by several factors. Changes in the branch-change policy have made it challenging for students to switch to their preferred engineering streams. As a result, many students are choosing to apply to newer IITs where they can directly enroll in their choice of courses. This shift has resulted in more vacant seats in some popular programs. Understanding these changes is important as it can help aspirants make better choices when applying to IITs.
