The Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) has seen a steady rise in participation over the last five years. Each year, thousands of aspirants compete for limited seats in National Law Universities (NLUs). From 2021 to 2025, the number of candidates appearing for CLAT has ranged from about 51,000 to 75,000. This consistent increase highlights the exam’s significance in shaping legal careers across the country. Here arethe last 5 years’ CLAT statistics.
Compared to other exams, like SLAT, LSAT, etc, the success rate of CLAT is very low. Only 4-6% of candidates among the total participants qualify for CLAT and secure a seat at the top NLUs. This is due to the limited number of seats available in these NLUs. The remaining 95% of candidates appear in other law exams or use the CLAT score for admission into law schools and colleges across the country.
The total number of NLUs has increased to 26, thereby increasing the number of seats in the last 5 years. The overall seat intake has increased to more than 4000, combining all UG and PG exams. Depending on candidates’ ranks, preference, category, and seat availability, candidates get admission to prestigious NLUs.
