Competency Based Questions Might Increase in NEET 2025

Competency Based Questions Might Increase in NEET 2025: The National Testing Agency (NTA) is preparing for significant changes in the NEET 2025 examination . Students awaiting the NEET 2025 exam date and official notification should focus on preparing for these updates. Competency Based Questions Might Increase in NEET 2025

Competency-based questions are designed to assess a candidate's ability to apply theoretical knowledge to real-life scenarios. Unlike traditional questions that test rote learning, these questions emphasize reasoning, analytical skills, and the ability to draw connections between different concepts. The NEET 2025 exam is expected to incorporate a higher number of such questions , aligning with the new National Education Policy (NEP) and global educational standards. According to experts, this change aims to better prepare students for the rigorous and dynamic nature of medical education and practice.

The Expected Level of Questions in NEET 2025

Until now, NEET featured very few competency-based questions. Starting this year, about four to five questions in each section are likely to be competency-based. These questions will focus on real-life situations, experiments, and practical applications rather than just theoretical knowledge. To tackle such questions, students are advised to pay close attention to their NCERT Lab Manuals and practice basic experiments. These resources can provide an understanding of practical scenarios, which are crucial for answering competency-based questions effectively.

Possible Changes in Question Format

During the COVID-19 pandemic, NEET featured 200 questions , of which students were required to attempt 180. This system provided students with some choice in questions. However, the NTA has removed the choice option in JEE Main , and it is possible that NEET 2025 will follow a similar pattern . If the choice is removed, students must prepare all topics thoroughly to attempt all 180 questions. NEET Free Study Material

Challenges in Achieving 100% Marks in NEET 2025

With the inclusion of more competency-based questions, securing a perfect score in NEET 2025 will undoubtedly be a daunting task. Here are some challenges students might face:
  • Complex Question Design: Questions may require extensive reasoning, making it difficult to arrive at the correct answer within the given time.
  • Balancing Speed and Accuracy: Students must strike a balance between solving questions quickly and maintaining accuracy, which becomes harder with complex problems.
  • Increased Competition: As the exam becomes more application-oriented, students who excel in critical thinking will have an edge, raising the overall competition.
  • Impact on Cut-Off and Competition : While the competition is expected to increase due to these changes, the overall cut-off may not see a drastic difference.

Preparation Tips to Deal with Competency Based Questions

Subject Matter Experts in NEET and JEE preparation, recommend the following:
  • Focus on NCERT: Master the NCERT textbooks and lab manuals for a clear understanding of the basics.
  • Practice JEE Papers: Solving previous years’ JEE Main papers in Physics and Chemistry can help with competency-based questions.
  • Develop Application Skills: Pay attention to real-life scenarios and experiment-based questions to build practical knowledge.
  • Stick to a Monthly Plan : Since NEET is usually held in May, divide your preparation into monthly goals to stay on track.
With the introduction of more competency-based questions, competition is expected to rise. However, experts believe that the overall cut-off may not see a significant change , as all students will face the same challenges.

Reviewing NEET's Question Pattern Over the Last Five Years

The NEET exam pattern has undergone gradual yet significant changes over recent years, showcasing a shift from rote learning to more concept-driven assessments. Here’s an overview:

  • 2021: The difficulty level shifted slightly, with 60% easy, 30% medium, and about 10% difficult questions.
  • 2022: A marked shift towards application-based questions became apparent. The question paper had a balanced mix, with 50% easy, 35% medium, and 15% difficult questions.
  • 2023-2024 : The difficulty level further increased as the NEET question paper focused more on critical thinking and interdisciplinary concepts. Approximately 40% of the questions were easy, 40% medium, and 20% difficult.
