The National Testing Agency (NTA) has added a new rule to break ties in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test-Undergraduate (NEET UG 2025) scores if the existing ones are not enough to arrive at a conclusion.
In the NEET 2025 information bulletin, NTA said if a tie between candidates' marks remains unresolved after the existing seven-point method, an independent expert committee will provide guidance and resolve it through a “random process”.

The NEET 2025 examination was conducted on May 4, 2025. NTA has declared the NEET 2025 Result on June 14, 2025 at the official website, neet.nta.nic.in. While preparing the results, the authorities adopt tie breaking criteria if two or more students got same marks. The tie breaking rule uses a specifc formula to determine the final ranking of students.
In order to maintain a fair evaluation process, NTA uses various parameters in breaking tie. We have outlined a detailed procedure for tie resoultion in National Eligibility cum Entrance Test below.

If two or more candidates obtain the same marks/percentile scores in NEET UG 2025, the tie-breaking method will be applied as follows:
Higher marks in Biology (Botany & Zoology) will be given preference.
If the tie persists, the candidate with higher marks in Chemistry will be ranked higher.
If still unresolved, the candidate with higher marks in Physics will be preferred.
If the tie continues, the candidate with a lower proportion of incorrect answers compared to correct answers in all subjects will be given a better rank.
If necessary, preference will be given to candidates with a lower proportion of incorrect answers in Biology.
If still unresolved, the candidate with a lower proportion of incorrect answers in Chemistry will be ranked higher.
If the tie remains, the candidate with a lower proportion of incorrect answers in Physics will get preference.
If all the above criteria fail, the tie will be resolved through a random selection process under the guidance of an independent expert committee

Apart from the NEET 2025 tie-breaking criteria, NTA has announced several major changes for NEET UG 2025:
Increased Choice for Exam Centres: For the first time, candidates can select up to three cities for their NEET exam centre instead of two. Candidates will have 3 hours (180 minutes) to complete the exam.
No more optional questions: The optional questions introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic have been removed, streamlining the exam format.
Extended Entry Time at Exam Centres: Exam centres will now open three hours before the exam starts, instead of the previous two hours.
The exam will be conducted from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM, with centres opening at 11:00 AM.
