NIOS Students Eligible for NEET UG 2025: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued a clarification on whether National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) students are eligible to appear for the NEET UG 2025. This clarification was needed due to confusion regarding the eligibility of NIOS students caused by differences between the National Testing Agency's (NTA) NEET-UG Bulletin 2025 and NMC regulations. The National Testing Agency (NTA) has opened the registration process for NEET UG 2025. Aspiring candidates can submit their applications online through the official website, neet.nta.nic.in, between February 7 and March 7, 2025.
The NMC stated that studyng through NIOS is permitted for appearing in NEET UG under GMER-23 regulations. Additionally, students are allowed to take an extra subject from NIOS if studied through an authorized institution.
Concerns about the eligibility of NIOS students for NEET UG 2025 arose when the NTA released the NEET Information Bulletin 2025, which mentioned specific eligibility criteria for NIOS students. An RTI application filed on February 11, 2025, further highlighted these concerns. In response, the NMC clarified that students who have pursued their education through NIOS, state open schools, or as private candidates are eligible to appear for NEET UG under the Graduate Medical Education Regulations (GMER) 2023. This clarification brings relief to many aspiring medical students who completed their education through open schooling.

The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) is an alternative education system designed for students who cannot attend regular schools. It is recognized by the government and follows a curriculum similar to CBSE and CISCE. However, certain professional courses, such as MBBS, have specific eligibility criteria for NIOS students, which have evolved over the years.
The eligibility of NIOS students for NEET and MBBS admissions has been a topic of debate over the years. Below are the key developments in this matter:
NEET Eligibility for NIOS Students as per NMC’s New Guidelines (2023)
As of 2023, the Graduate Medical Education Regulations (GMER) state that students who have completed their 10+2 education from any recognized board, including NIOS, can appear for NEET UG.
Students must meet subject-specific requirements: Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English.
Subject Requirements for NEET UG
Candidates must have studied Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English in 10+2.
Both theory and practical exams must be passed in these subjects.
Previously, NIOS students faced restrictions for NEET, but new regulations now recognize NIOS qualifications if these subject requirements are met.
Supreme Court’s Ruling on NIOS NEET Eligibility
In 2020, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of NIOS students, allowing them to appear in NEET.
Following this ruling, NMC updated its regulations to include NIOS students as eligible candidates.
In 2024, these rules remain unchanged, ensuring that NIOS students can apply for MBBS admissions if they fulfill the subject requirements.
