Importance of World Prematurity Day

Prematurity means babies born before they've completed 37 weeks in the womb. It's a big reason why some newborns don't make it, and it's the main cause for moms to be in the hospital before giving birth early. For babies born too early and weighing less than 1000 grams, the main causes of death are trouble breathing, infections, and birth defects. Babies can be born early for different reasons. Most of the time, it happens on its own, but sometimes it's because of health problems during pregnancy, like infections or other issues that make doctors decide to deliver the baby early or do a cesarean birth. A recent report from the United Nations and its partners shows that about 13.4 million babies were born too soon in 2020. Sadly, around one million of them didn't make it because of problems from being born too early. This means about one in every ten babies worldwide is born too early (before completing 37 weeks of pregnancy). The report also talks about big differences. In poorer countries, only one out of ten babies born extremely early (at 28 weeks) survives, while in richer countries, more than nine out of ten do. Even in wealthier countries, things like race, ethnicity, being poor, and getting good care can affect the chances of having a baby too early, or what happens to the baby afterward. Having a baby too early is now the biggest reason why babies die, making up more than one-fifth of all deaths in kids under five. Babies who survive being born too early might have health issues for a long time, like a higher chance of having a disability or being slower to develop. World Prematurity Day wants to help people understand this and try to stop babies from being born too early.
