INMO 2026: The Indian National Mathematical Olympiad (INMO) is a mathematics competition held in India which is the third step in International Mathematical Olympiad organized by HBCSE.

The Indian National Olympiad is an annual mathematics competition for high school students held in India. The Indian National Mathematical Olympiad (INMO) is the third stage for the top students who took the Regional Mathematical Olympiad. The INMO takes place nationwide on the third Sunday of January month i.e. on 18th January 2026.

How to Prepare for INMO

INMO Full Form

The INMO stands for the “Indian National Mathematical Olympiad,” the second stage of the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), which is conducted by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (India).

The INMO 2026 is going to be commenced on 18th January 2026 (Sunday). The goal of the Indian National Mathematical Olympiad is to bring secondary and higher secondary students together in a common competitive arena to showcase their passion and proficiency in Mathematics.

After successfully passing the INMO examination, the selected candidates are then trained at the IMOTC (International Mathematical Olympiad Training Camp) for developing conceptual foundations and problem-solving skills.

INMO 2026 Overview

INMO 2026 Registration

Applicants are informed that INMO 2026 Registration will start in December 2025. Students who have passed the admission criteria are eligible for INMO qualifications. Based on a wide range of criteria, studnets are selected for the INMO test. If a student is serious about taking the INMO exam and wants to apply, they must first qualify for the Regional Mathematical Olympiad (RMO) and finish in the top 30 in their country.

INMO Exam Eligibility Criteria

The following individuals are eligible to write INMO 2026 in January 2026 (3rd Sunday). All those students who are selected to write INMO 2026 through RMO 2025 to be held on 9th November 2025. The students whose names appear on the list 3. It will be the responsibility of the student to ensure that the above INMO eligibility criteria are satisfied. In case it is found at any later stage of the programme that a student does not meet the eligibility criteria, he or she may be disqualified from the programme.
  • From grades 8, 9, 10, and 11, a maximum of 28 students, and from grade 12 a maximum of 6 students are selected to participate in the HBCSE INMO in each region.

  • When there is a tie between the scores of two candidates, The Pre-Regional math Olympiad (Pre RMO) score will be considered as the tie-breaker. In a case where even the Pre RMO score fails to break the score, the final list submitted to the HBCSE will consider all the candidates.

  • Additionally, five additional girls are selected (Only girl students from grades 8, 9, 10, and 11) excluding the candidates for each region.

  • A minimum of five students from the Non-Kendriya Vidyalaya (KV) CBSE schools outside India and a maximum of five students studying in the KV schools outside India may be chosen to appear for the INMO 2026 examination directly. The selection of the students is mainly done by the authorities of the CBSE and KVS.

  • 28 students were selected from each region and allowed to sit for the INMO examination and usually the INMO examination is held in the month of February but due to the covid crisis in our country, the official dates are not yet announced. A total of 30 candidates qualify for the INMO 2026 examination out of the 500 candidates. The 30 qualified candidates are then sent to the month-long training at the HBCSE to prepare for the International Math Olympiad.

  • After the training camp is concluded, only the best six candidates are chosen to represent our country for the International Math Olympiad(IMO).

INMO 2026 Selection Criteria

1. To be considered for INMO 2026 a student who writes RMO Olympiad will have to secure a nonzero mark in RMO 2026. Note this is not the sole qualifying criterion.
2. RMO contestant from class 8, 9, 10, 11 will be classified as a Category A student.
3. RMO contestant from class 12 will be classified as a Category B student.
4. From each region (list of regions: https://www.mtai.org.in/rmo-region-codes/)
(a) the top 30 students from Category A will qualify for INMO 2026. The ties in the 30th position will be broken by the IOQM 2025 scores.
(b) the top 6 students from Category B will qualify for INMO 2026. The ties in the 6th position will be broken by the IOQM 2025 scores.
(c) 5 additional girl students from Category A irrespective of the number of girl students qualifying in the top 30 students from Category A will qualify for INMO 2026 under Girls’ quota.
(d) There is no separate Girls’ quota for Category B. A girl student of Category B can qualify for INMO 2026 from RMO 2026 if and only if she is selected among the top 6 students in Category B as described in point 4.(b) above.

INMO 2026 Exam Date Out

On the official portal of HBCSE (Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education) https://olympiads.hbcse.tifr.res.in/ the INMO Exam Date 2026 has been announced. For the students who qualify the RMO Exam 2026 have to appear for the INMO 2026 on 18th January 2026 (Sunday) at their respective centres nationwide.
Your centre will be considered as a test centre for INMO 2026, based on the completion of centre verification as well as decision of the committee. A few days before the INMO 2026 exam date, the INMO Admit Card 2026 will be issued to the eligible students.

INMO 2026 Exam Pattern

The INMO 2026 Examination is going to take place for those students who clear the RMO Examination for the ongoing year. Every year, the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education conducts the INMO Examination, which is the third level of the International Math Olympiad programme.
The INMO Exam Pattern 2026 is conducted in a paper-and-pencil format, with a total of six questions to be attempted four and half hour time limit conducted by the HBCSE regional coordinators which is descritptive in nature carrying a total of 102 marks.

INMO 2026 Syllabus

The INMO Syllabus primarily covers advanced pre-degree college mathematics, roughly corresponding to the Class 11 and Class 12 mathematics syllabus, but with significantly higher difficulty and sophistication. The INMO 2026 Syllabus excludes calculus and statistics and focuses on deep problem-solving skills in several core areas of mathematics.

Students have to enter roll numbers and date of birth to access the INMO results. Shortlisted candidates are going to appear for the next stage of the IMO.
