Private candidates are those who fall into one of the following categories:
Class 10 (Secondary) Private Candidates
CBSE permits certain students to appear as private candidates for Class 10 examinations if they were unable to appear in regular school exams or wish to improve their previous performance. The eligibility criteria for Class 10 private candidates are as follows:
Students who did not appear in regular school exams in 2025.
Students who were declared fail/essential repeat in previous years (2020-2025).
Candidates aiming to improve their performance in selected subjects.
Class 12 (Senior Secondary) Private Candidates
CBSE allows certain students to appear as private candidates for Class 12 examinations if they do not wish to enroll through a regular school or need another opportunity to improve their results. The eligibility criteria for Class 12 private candidates are as follows:
Students of session 2024-25 declared Essential Repeat in the 2025 exams.
Students of session 2024-25 placed in Compartment in the main or supplementary exams of 2025 (Second Chance Compartment Candidates).
Candidates who have failed or were declared Essential Repeat in the years 2020 to 2025.
Passed-out candidates of 2024-25 who wish to improve their marks in one or more subjects.
