CBSE Class 9 English Beehive Notes Chapter 9 If I Were You

If I Were You is a one-act play written by Douglas James. It begins with a playwright named Gerrard talking on the phone while getting ready to leave for a rehearsal. Just after the call, as he packs his bag, a stranger quietly enters his cottage from the side, holding a gun. Gerrard is calm even after seeing the intruder and begins a casual conversation with him instead of panicking.

The stranger, who looks quite similar to Gerrard, questions him about his life. Gerrard, being clever, stays composed and cooperates. He says he often travels for work, keeps a bag packed, and rarely meets people in person, only speaking to them on the phone. This shows that Gerrard leads a somewhat mysterious and private life.

As they talk, the intruder reveals that he is a criminal who steals jewellery and is on the run after killing a police officer. He plans to murder Gerrard and take his identity to escape the law. Realizing this, Gerrard quickly makes up a story, pretending to be a criminal himself. He says that he is being chased by the police for a murder.

The intruder falls for this lie. Gerrard then tricks him by suggesting he escape through the garage. When the intruder agrees, Gerrard pushes him into a cupboard and locks him inside. He then calls the police and reports the incident.

In the end, Gerrard's smart thinking and calmness save him from danger.
