The nucleus is a membrane-bound organelle that houses DNA and contains the cell's activities. The cytoplasm is a gel-like material that fills the cell and supports the functions of the organelles. Organelles, such as the mitochondria, the endoplasmic reticulum, and the Golgi apparatus, are specialised structures that enable the cell to perform specific functions. Together, these components and structures help maintain cell organization and allow the cell to survive and reproduce.

Cell Membrane

It acts as a barrier between the inside and outside of the cell and helps regulate what enters and leaves it. The cell membrane is a selectively permeable membrane composed of lipid and protein molecules that separates the interior of a cell from the extracellular environment. It plays an important role in maintaining the cell's homeostasis by regulating the movement of substances in and out. The cell membrane also contains receptor proteins, allowing the cell to communicate with other cells and the environment.

Cytoplasm

The liquid inside the cell that contains proteins and organelles. Cytoplasm is the gel-like material inside a cell that holds its organelles in place and provides structure and mobility to the cell. It consists of cytosol, a liquid solution of proteins, salts, sugars, and various organic molecules. The cytoplasm also contains organelles such as ribosomes, mitochondria, and the Golgi apparatus, which carry out important cellular functions.

Organelles that synthesise proteins. Ribosomes are complex macromolecular machines found in all living cells. They translate genetic information encoded in messenger RNA (mRNA) into proteins. Ribosomes comprise two subunits, the large and small subunits, which bind together and act as a single unit during translation. Ribosomes are essential for the production of proteins and are involved in various cellular processes, including protein folding and sorting.

Organelles that produce energy for the cell. Mitochondria are organelles found in the cells of most eukaryotic organisms. They act as the cell's powerhouses, helping create the chemical energy needed. Mitochondria are typically round and have an outer and inner membrane folded into layers called cristae. The inside of the mitochondria houses enzymes and proteins important for energy production.

Nucleus

An organelle that contains the cell's genetic material and controls most of the cell's activities. The nucleus is the control centre of a cell and is responsible for carrying out the instructions in the cell's DNA. It contains the cell's genetic information and regulates its activities by controlling gene expression. The nucleus also plays a role in cell division, growth, and death.

Endoplasmic Reticulum

An organelle that manufactures proteins and transports materials within the cell. The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is an essential cellular organelle in eukaryotic cells. It is composed of a network of interconnected flattened sacs and tubules. The ER is responsible for folding, packaging, transporting proteins, and synthesising lipids and carbohydrates. Additionally, the ER plays an important role in calcium storage, drug detoxification, and the regulation of gene expression. The ER is also associated with apoptosis, or programmed cell death, as it can promote or inhibit key processes.

Golgi Body

An organelle that modifies, stores and transports cellular materials. The Golgi body, also called the Golgi apparatus, is an organelle found in all eukaryotic cells. It comprises several flattened, membrane-bound sacs, with a complex network of vesicles and tubules connecting them. The Golgi body functions as a sorting and packaging centre for molecules synthesised in the cell, such as proteins and lipids. It has many roles in the cell, including sorting, modifying, and directing molecules to their correct destinations. Additionally, it is involved in the production of lysosomes and other types of secretory vesicles, and it plays a role in forming cilia and flagella.

Vacuoles

Organelles that help to store and transport materials within the cell. Vacuoles are membrane-bound organelles found in eukaryotic cells. They play various roles, including storing and releasing nutrients, ions, and other molecules. Vacuoles also help to maintain osmotic pressure, pH balance, and homeostasis within the cell. In addition, vacuoles can help to provide structural support and protection for the cell.

Lysosomes

An organelles that contain enzymes that break down large molecules. Lysosomes are membrane-bound organelles found in the cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells. They are typically spherical and are known for their ability to break down and recycle cellular components and debris. Lysosomes contain a variety of digestive enzymes, which can be used to break down and digest macromolecules such as proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids. They also play important roles in cell signalling, cell division, and vesicle transport.

An organelle that helps plants to convert energy from the sun into food for the cell. Chloroplasts are organelles found within plant cells that are responsible for photosynthesis. They contain the green pigment chlorophyll, which is used to absorb light energy from the sun and convert it into energy the plant can use. Chloroplasts are essential for the growth and development of plants, and without them, plants would not be able to survive.

Plastids

Plastids are organelles found in plants and algae that are essential for photosynthesis and food production. They are composed of a double membrane and contain a variety of pigments and enzymes necessary for photosynthesis. Plastids come in various shapes, sizes and colours, depending on plant or algae species.
