1. Why did Abbu Khan’s goats want to run away? What happened to them in the hills? 

Ans: Abbu Khan’s goats longed to escape because they desired freedom. Being native to the hilly regions, they disliked being confined or tied to trees and poles. Although Abbu Khan owned some of the finest breeds of goats, their instinct for independence always led them to flee. 

Unfortunately, each time they ventured into the hills, they were eventually killed by an old wolf that lived there.

2. Abbu Khan said, “No more goats in my house ever again.” Then he changed his mind. Why?

Ans: Abbu Khan loved the company of his pets and he couldn’t live without them. He changed his mind as he was feeling lonely without his goats.

3. Why did he buy a young goat?

Ans: Abbu Khan decided to buy a young goat, believing that a younger one would stay with him longer and grow to love him over time. He hoped that with his care, affection, and the good food he provided, the goat would become attached to him and never feel the urge to run away to the hills.

4. Why did Chandni hate the rope round her neck?

Ans: Chandni desired to explore the green fields and visit the hills. But whenever she wished to move ahead and run away, the rope stopped her with a jerk. She wanted to be free and enjoy her freedom. That’s why she hated the rope round her neck.

5. “Now Abbu Khan understood Chandni’s problem...” What was Chandni’s problem?

Ans: As a mountain goat, Chandni cherished her freedom and longed to roam the hills. However, the rope around her neck kept her from experiencing that freedom. Abbu Khan soon realized that it was this rope that troubled Chandni and kept her from being truly happy.

6. Abbu Khan pushed Chandni into a small hut. This shows that he

 She didn’t flee like a coward but stood her ground bravely, like a soldier facing a deceitful enemy. Throughout the night, she battled the wolf with unwavering spirit. Though she was found lifeless and covered in blood the next morning, her bravery and love for freedom made her victorious.

10. “Death in an open field is better than life in a small hut,” Chandni said to herself. Was it the right decision? Give reasons for your answer.

Ans: Freedom necessitates bravery and the ability to tackle any problem or scenario. Chandni could have returned to Abbu Khan after spotting the wolf. But for her freedom, was more valuable than life. To keep her freedom, she chose to battle the wolf, telling herself that success or failure was a matter of chance and that she had to fight hard. She battled with all her might, and she won.

11. Freedom is life. Discuss this with reference to ‘Chandni’ and ‘I Want Something in a Cage’. 

Ans: "Freedom is life; captivity is no different from death. Whether human, bird, or animal, every living being yearns to be free. The stories I Want Something in a Cage and Chandni beautifully emphasize the importance and value of freedom. In the former, a man who had spent ten years in prison empathizes with two caged doves and sets them free, seeing in them a reflection of his own longing for liberty. In the latter, Abbu Khan's goats, driven by an intense desire to roam the hills, repeatedly escape his care despite the lurking danger of a wolf. Chandni, the central character, chooses to face the wolf rather than return to the safety of captivity. 

Her brave decision highlights how deeply she treasures her freedom. For her, dying in the open hills was preferable to surviving in confinement. The story ultimately conveys that true freedom demands courage, and even a short life of liberty is far more meaningful than a long life in bondage."

12. What misfortune came to Chandni after sunset?

Ans: After sunset, a big and strong wolf came down from the hills and attacked Chandni. She was all alone but still decided to fight bravely to protect her freedom. A fierce battle took place between Chandni and the wolf. Though she was small and weak compared to the wolf, she did not give up. Sadly, by morning, Chandni was found lying dead in the valley. She lost the fight, but she died with courage and honor.
