Har Ghar Tiranga 2025

Har Ghar Tiranga was launched under Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav in 2022 to encourage citizens to hoist the national flag at their homes and offices and build a personal and emotional connection with the tricolor national flag. This movement has become strong with a lot of Indian families, students, and citizens paying tribute to the Tiranga as a symbol of national unity and pride.

What is Har Ghar Tiranga Campaign?

The Ministry of Culture, through the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign, invites all Indian citizens to participate in hoisting the national flag at homes and celebrate the pride of the nation. The campaign is supported in equal measures by state governments, volunteers, and local bodies so that the Independence Day celebration becomes a vibrant and personal celebration for everyone.

Har Ghar Tiranga History

The Har Ghar Tiranga was launched in 2022 by the Ministry of Culture. Every sovereign nation in the world has its flag. The campaign was visualized to forge a deeper connection between the Indian National Flag and its citizens. It was first launched in 2022 to mark the 75th anniversary of Indian Independence. Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged citizens to hoist the national flag at their homes and change their social media display pictures to the Tricolor.

Since its initiation, the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign has evolved into a mass movement witnessing widespread participation from across the country. The campaign particularly targets to engage the youth of the country and inspire them to reflect upon and honor the legacy of freedom fighters and the democratic values they fought for.

History of Indian National Flag

The Indian National Flag was adopted in the existing form by the Constituent Assembly on July 22, 1947. The tricolor flag became the national flag of the Dominion of India between August 1947 to January 1950, and the Republic of India after that.

  • Pingali Venkaya is considered the pioneer of the tricolor national flag. He published a book titled ‘A National Flag for India’ in 1916, which featured around 30 designs for a potential Indian flag, inspired by the flags of other countries of the world.
  • One of his designs was approved by Mahatma Gandhi to be adopted as the national flag of India in 1921 at a Congress meeting in Vijaywada.
  • The initial flag was termed ‘Swaraj Flag’. It consisted of two red and green bands representing Hindus and Muslims. The flag also had a Charkha, which represented Swaraj. Gandhi advised him to add a white band for the representation of peace.
  • In 1931, the Flag Committee replaced the red band with saffron on top, followed by white and then green bands. The charkha was placed in the middle of the white band.
  • After India’s independence, the National Flag Committee under President Rajendra Prasad replaced the Charkha with the Ashok Chakra.

Indian National Flag

The Indian National Flag, also referred to as ‘Tiranga’, is a horizontal tricolor which features saffron at the top, white in the middle, and green at the bottom. The meaning of Tiranga flag can be summarized as follows:

  • Saffron stands for courage and sacrifice, white stands for truth and peace, and green represents fertility and growth of the country.
  • A navy blue Ashok Chakra in Tiranga with 24 spokes is placed at the centre of the white band. It represents progress and righteousness.
  • The dimensions of the national flag should have a length-to-width ratio of 3:2, and are produced in different standard sizes.
  • The flag is traditionally made of khadi, and with the amendment of the Flag Code of India, 2002, the flag can now be permitted to be made of cotton, polyester, wool, or silk.
