Kisan Diwas highlights the struggles of farmers, such as low income, poor infrastructure, and unpredictable weather patterns. Farming is crucial to India’s economy. The agricultural sector accounts for about 17.7 % share of the total Gross Value Added (GVA) of the country in FY 2023-24. It employs around 45.76% of the total workforce (PLFS ), yet farming remains a sector facing numerous challenges. The government and various groups use Kisan Diwas to raise awareness and make sure that farmers receive the help and support they need.

List of Schemes for Farmers in India

India’s government has launched several schemes to support farmers and boost agricultural growth. These schemes aim to address financial, technological, and resource-related challenges faced by farmers:
  • Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN): This scheme provides financial help to farmers. It gives Rs. 6,000 annually in three installments to small and marginal farmers and has benefited over 11 crore farmers so far.
  • PM Fasal Bima Yojana: This crop insurance scheme helps farmers cover losses due to natural disasters, pest attacks, or disease. It ensures that farmers do not face financial hardship if their crops are damaged.
  • Soil Health Management Scheme: This scheme helps farmers manage their soil better. Farmers get soil health cards that tell them about the nutrients in their soil. This helps them improve crop yields by using the right fertilizers.
  • Agriculture Infrastructure Fund (AIF): Introduced under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, AIF aims to bridge infrastructure gaps in agriculture. A total fund of Rs. 1 lakh crore is allocated for the development of post-harvest infrastructure and community farming assets.
  • National Mission on Edible Oils (NMEO)-Oil Palm: This scheme was launched in 2021 to reduce the country's dependence on imported edible oils. It aims to bring 6.5 lakh hectares under oil palm cultivation by 2025-26, with a budget of Rs. 11,040 crore.
  • Namo Drone Didi Scheme: A newly approved scheme for Women Self Help Groups (SHGs), Namo Drone Didi will provide drones to 15,000 SHGs for agricultural services such as pesticide and fertilizer application.
