Voting Rights in Indian History
The
right to vote in Indi

Indian Councils Act of 1861
introduced representative institutions, but only a few nominated members had voting rights. Later acts, like the
Indian Councils Act of 1892
and the
Morley-Minto Reforms of 1909
, expanded councils but limited voting to a small percentage of men.
Women
gained limited voting rights in
1918
, with stricter conditions. The
Government of India Act of 1935
extended electoral eligibility to more individuals. After independence in
1947,
India adopted universal adult franchise, allowing all citizens
over 21
to vote. Finally, the voting age in India was lowered to 18 by
the
61st Constitutional Amendment Act
, 1989.
Today, voting rights are an integral part of India’s democratic identity with
91.2 Crore eligible
